Cant get to desktop in new inst. Fedora 9

I've been having a problem getting to the desktop on a new install of Fedora 9. After the setup screen the screen goes blank. The monitor system properties show the resolution coming from the video card (ATI HD 3650) as 0x0. I checked the driver and it is using the vesa driver. This is my first experience with linux, I'm looking foward to getting it working right. Does anyone know what is going wrong here or what can be done to get it to work?
