Can't logon as root or any other user

Did an upgrade to rawhide yesterday from f9. The problem is that when I boot and get the gdm log on screen I type in root and my password it just says wrong password. I boot up in run level 3 and enter the user and password all is fine then I can startx to get to gnome. Tired of that so I put in this in the home dir .xinitrc exec startkde. Now I can boot up in run level 3 and login. Then when I startx I get KDE.

I would love to fix either the login with gdm of kdm

They set it to not allow root login at the greeter for security reasons.

Thanks... I figured that out after a reformat. Now I am running the PAE kernel but I think I'm going to go with the x86_64.. Just so I can have fun with my nvidia card...
