Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG Help

Following the instructions available at http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/INSTALL . I had attempted to install the necessary component needed, but I met up with some slight problem.

In the install instruction, I was asked to place the firmware into /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/ but I wasn’t able to find the directory on my installation , so i created the directory myself.

Next I try to load the driver myself using insmod ipw2200.ko, after loading the driver I was able to see it using iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions
sit0 no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions
eth1 IEEE 802.11bg Mode: Monitor

But when I attempted to set the SSID using iwconfig eth1 essid "blahblah" I get the following error message

Error for wireless request “Set ESSID” (8B1A):
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported

My kernel version is 2.6.5-1.358 (Fedora Core 2) on a i686

did you compile your kernel and enable firware loading?
Quote:
You need to enable firmware loading
The kernel must be configured to enable wireless capabilities
(CONFIG_NET_RADIO=y).
Failure to do this will result in the Wireless Tools (iwconfig, iwlist,
etc.) not functioning.
As that sounds like the problem you are having.

I could not get my 2100 working correctly so I installed ndiswrapper to run the windows driver. I beleive your chipset is supported.http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ - on the chipsets page you can download the recommended driver. Hope this helps....

not to discourage you from doing things the manual (for lack of a better word) way but you ought to use "make gconfig" or "make xconfig" to configure you kernel. It should save you time, and it looks much easier than using "make menuconfig" or worse "make config."
