unusual automatic update?

I just installed Fedora 9 (2.6.25-14.fc9.i686)
After a long batch of automatic updates in the Red drop-down list (which I agreed to),
I notice that there's an additional Kernel version added to GRUB. (2.6.25-10-86.fc9.i686)

Surely this is an earlier kernel and not an update?
Why should I use this one as default (top of the boot list)?
Is it more suitable for my PC?

John

By default, Fedora will keep one previous kernel as well as installing the new kernel. That's so that if you have problems with the 'latest', you still have a working kernel to boot into. Once two kernels are listed, each new kernel install will also remove the oldest kernel.

Your newest one should be on top (check the sequence numbers to confirm) and should be the default one when you boot into Fedora. Edit: I just checked - and kernel-2.6.25.10-86.fc9.i686.rpm is the latest one.

Bob, Thanks for explaining that. I originally had 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 which I assume is newer?
I was confused when 2.6.25.10-86.fc9.i686 was placed above it in GRUB.

As I think hlingler posted elsewhere 2.6.25-14 is in effect 2.6.25.0-14 hence 2.6.25.10-86 is newer ie 10 versus the implied 0.

Thanks for explaining that. So in Kernel 2.6. the number 25 means 25.0 unless otherwise named and the numbers after the hyphen are minor updates.
