An engineers holiday
Ordinarily, I don't pass along stuff that gets sent to me in the email, but once again ... I think this one is worth it.

Can engineers take holidays? Don't they look at everything and think "I wonder how this thing works?" or "I wonder how I can make it better?"
A bit like psychiatrists really

That's so close to the truth it hurts. Engineers just work on things they like, all the time, and if someone pays them, so much the better.
Typical remarks heard by customers:
Technician - "It's broken. Should have it fixed in an hour or so."
Engineer - "It's broken. What were they thinking when they made this? I would have never have done it that way. And this bit here is just asking for trouble. Fix it? No idea. But this whole section needs to be replaced and .... heck, I should just design a better one. Give me six months."

You may consider this the blessed curse and cursed blessing of engineers.

Engineers never seem satisfied when they "fix" things. Rather than be content that something is "working as designed" they continue to "fix" them until something else breaks I have first hand experience, as my father was an electronic engineer who worked for Gestetner in the UK, before radically changing careers

The best engineers are lazy. Not only is laziness the mother of invention, but also laziness makes an engineer stop when the standard is met or the customer is satisfied.
After all he/she could be drinking beers instead.
