Some migration pointers please :)

Im migrating from ubuntu but would like to know how fedora handles things like

-locate, dpkg and modprobe.
-How to restart the Xserver & others from textmode eg. /etc/init.d/whatever restart

None of them seem to work in the way i know them.

Also, i tried installing the proprietry ati driver for my mobility radeon to see if it was any faster. Big mistake, screen just flickers in text mode (my card is too old).
I want to go back to the default one that came with it (that was 3d accelerated). I tried restoring the xorg.conf to the radeon driver and it works, but now its using mesa indirect and there is no direct rendering (the desktop fx dont work anymore either -not that i use them anyway, but are fun sometimes .

locate, dpkg and modprobe.

locate should be very similar. dpkg can be configured, but I personally prefer yum with the livna repos enabled. modprobe behaves the same way in every distro to my knowledge. It would help if you could post more specific questions on your problems.

How to restart the Xserver & others from textmode eg. /etc/init.d/whatever restart

startx? If you use a windowmanager create the ~/.xinitrc file and put your 'exec wm' line there. You could also try killing gdm/kdm and that would automatically restart X.

/etc/init.d/whatever restart works in Fedora as well. Assuming of course that 'whatever' is the service in question.

I don't know the status of proprietary drivers because I don't use them. So you might want to wait for a bit for someone else to respond to that. You could of course try removing the xorg.conf file and let Fedora automatically detect the settings for you.

PS: Perhaps this is the biggest advantage of buying Intel hardware; both the wireless and the GMA graphics are supported through free software drivers! Oh, and welcome to the Fedora world

There's no "dpkg" in Fedora, it's specific to the Debian software packaging system. The "rpm" command is a roughly equivalent low-level package manager. Yum is the main command-line tool for package management.
The X server isn't a "service" in the sense of having a start/stop script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/. You can start it from the command line with "startx".

Ok thanks.

When i type modprobe though it does say command not found.. odd.

Startx is good to know, on ubuntu before if i simply typed startx i would get a grey screen with an X for the cursor. To restart the whole thing after killing it, it was something like /etc/init.d/gdm start (or something like that - i cant remember without my notes & im currently using yawn-dows at work)

The other thing i want to so is make sudo active for the default user, this was done for me before and all my own scripts are set up to use it. any ideas on that be welcome.

You must be root to use modprobe. Remember to use "su -" instead of plain "su", or else your $PATH isn't set correctly resulting in "command not found" errors.

Thanks for correcting me on dpkg markkuk.

dgrafix:

modprobe can be found in /sbin/modprobe

As for sudo, you can insert the following line in /etc/sudoers:

username ALL=(ALL) ALL

Just replace 'username' with your username.
