FC1 or FC2 on very old laptop?

Hi Guys. I'm not quite sure where to post this, but I'll give it a go under "LapTops"...

I have a very old laptop, 266Mhz, 128 MB RAM and a 6GB disk, currently running Core 1.

Is there any point in installing Core 2 on this one? Will the 2.6 kernel speed up or slow down this old laptop?

I wouldn't recommend it, actually. I have a 333Mhz Celeron with similar hardware and it barely runs any kind of GUI - it'd probably be better off with Windows 98 on it, to be honest. Or a distro that specifically caters to older hardware - FC1/2 just about kills mine in terms of running X. If it's running and stable, unless you really want to mess with it, I'd leave it well enough alone...

Vector Linux is quite a good choice to use with old machines. I've never tried it, but I've heard good things about it.

Fedora Core 1 + decent sized swap + XFCE or Blackbox + speed tweaks

I've had fedora on a 233 + 64mb + 3gb and it was ALMOST useable!

I have a 300MHz with 128MB RAM with RedHat 9, Fluxbox, and ROX-Filer on it and it runs really well. Whatever light windowmanager you chose, you'll probably want to try out ROX-Filer--it is much faster than Konquerer or Nautilus. For lightweight wordprocessing try Abiword.

Yes use a unbloated wm like xfce or flux and don't install too many packages and you should be set. You might want to try vector (like he said above), its specifcally made for older systems.
