Adding "Edit as Root" to the context menu
How can I insert an "edit as root" option in the right-click context menu when I right-click an editable file? In Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS this option is there by default. Thank you for your help.

For when I browse through folders and files with Konqueror. For instance, when I want to edit a configuration file in /etc. I would like to just right-click on the file and choose "edit as root". Thanks.

It does appear as an option in some KDE distributions.
Something that I've always missed in Fedora but assumed was as a result of some decision in development circles.
PCLinuxOS is the one I can actually see it in now.

So I guess my request is not possible then? That's too bad. I hate having to su to root in a shell and navigate to a certain directory just to open configuration files that reside outside my /home folder. Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS have Fedora beat in this category.

System -> Prefernces -> Look and Feel -> Nautilus Actions Configuration
(if you don't have it, I think it's
Code:
yum install nautilus-actions
You'll also need sudo/ gksudo enabled. Look at the forum for info
In nautilus actions:
Label: open file as root
Tooltip: open file with root privileges
Path: gksudo
Parameters: gnome-open %M

Hi Mark, I must not have sudo or gksudo enabled because I followed your instructions, and when I right-click a file I still don't see an "edit as root" option. I did search around for a few minutes and didn't see any instructions. Could you please tell me how to do this?
I'm currently using Fedora 10 (was using 8 when I started this thread), and since there is still no "edit as root" option in the context menu, I can only assume that the Fedora developers are purposefully keeping this unavailable since it appears by default in Ubuntu and SuSE.

http://gtk.org/setuid.html
It is a complex issue, but not at all fedora-specific. On the other hand users
coming from windows are used to viruses, worms, et al.

I can't remember how to add an option to the pulldown menu but here is one idea.
If your editor of choice is present in the start menu then right click on the start menu button and select edit menu.
Then locate the editor you wish to use. \
Now select copy and then paste. It will create one with same name with a -2 after.
Select that one and rename say to name_of_editor superuser
Then check the box as a different user. Type root as the user.
Save and exit.
Now select the control center in the start menu
Select KDE Components > File Associations > Then under that the text one and probably plain one in the text list.
Then select Add under the Application Preference Order section
Locate the new editor superuser one you created and add to the list.
How to use.
Now on a plain text file like /etc/X11/xorg.conf right click on it and select Open With and select the editor superuser one.
