Is the ATI x1550 driver available yet?

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=172121
seems to indicate that this card is as yet unsupported?

I'm on FC8, nothing flashy, I just want a decent display?

Card installed, fails on smartd service starting.
http://ati.de/support/driver.html isn't showing any sign of a driver for this.

Any suggestions please?

TIA Dave

I saw that, thanks for the quick reply.
I'm puzzled now.
Top of that page is says to check that the drivers are available?
They are not listed for the x1550?

Does it still work Leigh?

regards Dave

Followed that install. All went as expected (This was with my old graphics
card installed).

Rebooted - comes up to starting 'smartd' service.
Screen clears, goes blank. Remains blank.

Ati won't drop support for a card in a newer fglrx version ( so it should be supported )

Or edit xorg.conf

Code:
# Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "Monitor0"
	VendorName "Unknown"
        Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

you may have to add the refresh rates for your monitor ( this can be found in the monitor handbook normally )

example only

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Philips 190V"
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0

EndSection

Yes, I tried tighter numbers, closer to those I showed you.
Still blocks at smartd on boot.

Last try, then it's for the bottom drawer.
I'll perhaps try one of the GeForce cards
Hope driver support is better there.
Any recommendations please?

I don't play games, so fancy speed isn't an issue.
My current card is on the way out, fan bearings.

Thanks for your help Leigh.

Try disabling smartd

Code:
su -
chkconfig --level 12345 smartd off
service smartd stop
Have you tried another monitor ? ( as a test )

Any Nvidia card FX series or higher is good . ( I use 7600GT )
Driver support for Nvidia is good

It's clearly driving the monitor (no, I don't have a spare :-)
Just not working.

Grrr.

Thanks anyway Leigh.

I can run the first of those two lines after booting in level 1,
but not the second.

Interesting. Re-installed the kernel from FC8 DVD
Ran OK (couple of boot warnings), but graphics OK!

Lowered the screen resolution to 1024, but to no effect.
Soon as I went back to the most recent kernel it fails again!

Something is upsetting ATI!

regards Dave
7600 GT on order.
Hope the driver installs are easier on that one :-)
