You need to set up the interface.
System>Administration>Network (See Screen shot ignore wlan2)

System>Administration>Services
Turn on network manager and the dispatcher, turn off wpa_supplicant on boot.
If the services aren't started start them here.

on startup:

modprobe ndiswrapper -i

and it installs and then i do /sbin/iwconfig

it loads up just fine then it reads the network its "connected" to...but rx and tx are 0

it still doesnt show in the system>admin>network

and after a min it hard freezes the system and i have to restart

Hi, marble53.
I don't know if it's just a typo, but in your modprobe command there really shouldn't be a -i. I don't know what you mean when you say that you set up ndiswrapper. Do you mean that you did something like this?

make
make install
ndiswrapper -i /path/to/windows/driver.inf
ndiswrapper -m
ndiswrapper -l
modprobe ndiswrapper

The 'make' commands aren't needed if you installed the ndiswrapper rpm package(s).

(The thing is, there's an ndiswrapper module, and an ndiswrapper executable.)

(I hope this post is not redundant. It didn't look to be that way when I started it.)

Ndiswrapper is not a perfect solution unfortunately.
What does this give you for the wireless device
/sbin/lspci

What exactly was displayed for the device from
/sbin/lspci
You may have a driver issue, i'd like to see output.

rumor has it that use of the win98 drivers is more likely to be successful under ndiswrapper; havent tried it yet myself. Also, if you have a 64-bit setup, Realtek has not released any but a Vista driver which ndiswrapper doesn't handle.

Realtek does supply a linux driver, but there seems to be no more success with that than the kernel supplied module (which may be the same anyway), based on my monitoring of some forums.

Short story: you are not alone in the hanging issue with the rtl8185 chipset.

I haven't given up yet, as I do keep running into reports of success, including on this forum; but I did buy a trendnet usb dongle to use in the meantime. I just plain was spending too much time on the rtl8185. I hope to try the win98 drivers w/ndiswrapper in the next couple of days.

Couple of threads to watch. I'm sure you can find some others also, as I say the problem is pretty pervasive.

I am on the rtl8185 chip now, from my gateway mt3422 w/amd 64 athlonx2. Running 32bit unbuntu studio at 7.10 (Gutsy), and using the win98 drivers from Realtek via ndiswrapper. Let me know either via the forum or private message if you still need help getting through ndiswrapper et.al.
