Why is microphone functionality such a mess in Linux in general! (Linux universal )
My view is that such a basic device should work as easy as audio playback! Why isn't it? Why do I have to fiddle with several mixers before it works? I use gnome, but with gnome mixer I can't get my microphone to work - I have to fiddle with kmix as well. Can't the people programming the functionality give us the users the power to decide wheter we:
1: Want the microphone active after a reboot.
2: Decide upon a minimum standard functionality in the different mixers like having mic boost built in.
3: That the settings we make are remembered - see topic 1.
4: ...
Or are these requests impossible due to that the devices changes behaviour between reboots and the mixers have to apply as a consequence?
I haven't seen any good answers to these questions yet and what do we have - F8 soon to be out? What does this imply?
Brgds to all!

Well, you're in a users forum, talking to users who might have workarounds but don't handle the development work. If you have a problem, then you need to do one of the following: File a Bugzilla on it https://bugzilla.redhat.com/ or communicate with the developers starting here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate

So, that is the problem then bob!!!
The programmers doesn't take the time to find out how their creations is taken by the users to see what improvements might be needed. It sounds just as a Redmond company I've heard of...

The problem is yours as you seem to refuse to use bugzilla to report faults so they can be fixed if necessary .

Now, how would I put such a request in Bugzilla? Make all the different Mixers equal in functionality? Why should there exist more than on in that case?
I have to add that this is not a redhat problem. They are just standing on other peoples work. This is a general Linux problem found in every distribution - at least this is my belief. I have seen people posting in ubuntu, debian, fedora (of course). I havn't checked the others. So what help will I have with putting this in redhats bugzilla! No, there has to be a awakening first, a momentum of users demanding high enough!
Brgds!

I'm not whining, my mic is working to. But when I reboot it doesn't - I have to fiddle before it does. I am not intressted in that - just function! So, I don't ask for help, I'm just want to make an statement - it doesn't work as good as it should!
Hopefully this will be heard up in the ivory towers soon. I'm not going on guru hunt in the towers to find answers. I just state - this is a mess!

You better try else where as this forum is unofficial and isn't sponsored by fedora ( The fedora developers are to posh to associate with the end users and prefer mailing lists to communicate )

Microphone functionality is specific to the audio chips in each individual system. Most of them do work correctly.

Correctly is a point of view... Why can't I choose to have the microphone active at startup? I thought that was a setting, not a H/W issue!

Hi Seve!
With some fiddeling I have my mic working but after a reboot it's deactivated again. I would like to have it active until I choose to deactivate it! Easy as that!

In Bugzilla, you'd report the failed module (picklist) and then give a description of what you expected to have happen and what failed, followed by info on the workaround you found. That gives the developers a starting place to see why it only works after tweaking.
So, here's the thing. If you want to give some info and see about having a solution found here in the Forum, we're happy to help. Maybe it's easy. If you want to give the developers a piece of your mind, then I've given you the Communicate link. If you just want to complain to other users, be prepared to get a load of negative feedback. Human nature, you know.

Okay, then your mike is working after a fashion and you don't want to report the problem through channels and have had the opportunity to vent a bit. That's your choice and we're happy to have been here for you in that capacity.
Not to belabor the issue, but you initially mentioned that this problem as 'linux in general'. Which other distros have you tried and still had the problem?
