Unhappy OpenOffice.org Crashes When Loaded

Hello,
Every time I open an Open Office application, writer, impress, whatever, all I get is a window border with transparent insides, it used to work fine, then refused to work when run by clicking on an OO.o document in a file browser, now it doesn't even work when run from the K menu, I've tried updating, re-installing, but no change.

Eventually, I close the window with the top right button and after a short pause I get a kill application dialogue:

Code:
Window with title "Untitled1 - OpenOffice.org Impress" is not responding. This window belongs to application openoffice.org 2.2 (PID=4337, hostname=localhost).
Do you wish to terminate this application? (All unsaved data in this application will be lost.)

I suggest running it from a terminal. (Look at the properties of the toolbar icon for it and run the command that is given there.) Reading the error messages from the terminal or posting them in this thread might locate the problem.

Code:
[michael@lambert ~]$ openoffice.org -writer
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org/program/soffice: line 222: 8008 Killed "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
This was all I got.

EDIT: Hmmm, it runs fine when I run it from a root terminal .

A user has various configuration files in his home directory. Some, like .Xauthority, can get corrupted and prevent the user from doing things. Create a new user and see if that account can use Open Office.

If we distinguish between ideas and solutions, I have ideas. ( Someone who understood the details of all the various configuration files in a users directory might be able to provide a solution. ) To begin with, I suggest looking through the logs to see if you can find a message about Open Office getting killed ( /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure, /var/log/gdm/ 0.log: )
You could also try renaming various configuration files in the new user's account and see what operation reproduces the same error.

Is Open Office the only application that has a problem?
