Fedora 6 not deleting files????

ok, so I was noticing that my hard drive on my secondary machine was getting fuller and fuller, like it wasn't deleting anything. Then I copied a few gigs to it temporarily and it filled the drive almost completely (It's a 40 gig ). So now my problem is it isn't deleting any files at all. I went into a failsafe termanal becouse kde gave me an error, then I logged in as root and used rm and rmdir to clean out dome space but df still says that I have used 100% of / . Any suggestions?

hi zygomatic,

that means it doesnt remove it just moves...
I would take a strong look at the output from:
Code:
du -h /
you might then discover where the hidden data is. I would guess it is in /tmp/.*

I would check which/where exactly the files are that take up all the space. You can do this through the cli (as InKo pointed out) or using the nice graphical tool that comes with gnome, the disk-usage analyzer. Go to Applications, System-tools, Disk-usage analyzer (translated from German, might have a slightly different name on your system). Click the "read filesystem" button and voilą, everything is listed and has additionally a nice graphical display on the right side to examine more about the disk-usage.
