package manager error

I am running fedora core 6 (for the first time now as per a previous thread) and I am getting the following error when trying to open the package manager in order to install packages...

any ideas what the cause may be?
Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: core

First, from the command line, as root user:
Code:
yum clean all
See if that helps.

Post your /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo

Is this an updated system or a clean install?

Check your config file using your favorite text editor: /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-core.repo. Here's what mine looks like (I've left out the disabled debug and devel entries):
Code:
[core]
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=core-$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
You may also want to check with your file browser to make sure that the gpgkey file is in fact installed: /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora (should exist).

If your /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-core.repo file does not look like mine, edit it (as root user) with your favorite text editor (or cut-and-paste) so that it does. Then try again. Running the "yum clean all" command first is always an good idea.

BTW, what "package manager" are you using?

Finally, it is always possible that the repo servers are too busy or are temporarily down. Wait a few hours, then try again - there are no needed updates that can't wait a few hours.

Good Luck,
V

Oops! Sorry, lazlow - must learn to type faster.

Try pinging mirrors.fedoraproject.org

Edit: It appears dead from here. It may be undergoing maintenance. I would try tomorrow.

It appears that your /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo is now faulty. Simple work-around to get mysql installed:
Code:
yum --disablerepo=livna* install mysql
You might have found this on your own:
Code:
man yum
I encountered this same problem a while back. Even though you haven't asked, here's how I solved it: edit /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo (disabled debug and source entries omitted):
Code:
[livna]
failovermethod=priority
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna
name=Livna for Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
mirrorlist=file:///etc/yum.repos.d/livna.mirrors
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
Then create the mirrorlist file:
Code:
touch /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.mirrors
and edit it with your favorite text editor so that it reads:
Code:
ftp://cle.linux.org.tw/pub/livna/$releasever/$basearch/
http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/i386/
All of the above must be done as root user. Works for me.

BTW, some explanation of the problem, rather than just posting an error output, would be appropriate. "Please" and "Thank You" are also nice.

I am still getting the following output from yum even after making the necessary changes as suggested.

Hello:

I forgot to mention that you should back-up all files before overwriting - just in case I'm wrong.
See: http://forum.fedoraforum.org/forum/s...36&postcount=3, then try again. It is always a good idea to clear caches after such changes.

I do not see the output of
Code:
yum --disablerepo=livna* install mysql
That command should bypass all livna* repos for this transaction.

Hello:

When I click on the hyperlink: http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...re-6&arch=i386 in your last post, my browser (firefox) opens to the correct web page that lists the mirrors. What happens if you click on this link? Does your browser take you to that page (it's just a page of text)??? If so, there is some other problem causing yum to fail to connect, in which case it's not a problem with yum, but something else.....

The "[Errno 14] HTTP Error 407: Via:1.1 CTRAD", "Proxy-Authenticate" messages, and the messages that follow them are not familiar to me (and you didn't mention them in your original post). Do you have SELinux enabled? If so, that could be the cause of your yum connection problems. If enabled, disable it. Are you connecting through a proxy server? If so, that may be your problem, but I have no experience with proxy servers.

If your browser can access the mirror page, then I would suggest that you start a new thread, referencing this one, asking for help with your internet connection, since in that case it is not a problem with yum/installation/package manager, but a network connection/authentication problem.

Good Luck,
Vince
