wine use causes shutdown problem

running Fedora Core6 on a modern PC. wine version 0.9.27
Any time I invoke wine, either running a windows program or winecfg, (which run fine), when I go to the gnome "System" "Shutdown" the panels and icons dissapear, the keyboard becomes inactive but I'm left with the desktop wallpaper and an active mouse cursor, then I have to turn the power off.
However if I do "poweroff" at a terminal, initially I get the same wallpaper and mouse, but after several seconds the mouse becomes inactive then computer does shutdown.

problem is very similar in kde but I don't get wallpaper, just the mouse cursor on a dark screen

I've checked in system monitor that no wine programs are still running after I terminate the windows app

Also running core4 on this PC, that doesn't have this problem, but it's the 0.9.37 version of wine.

If I haven't used wine in the session it always shutsdown normally.

I've filed the bug with wine and had a reply saying it was probably a FC6 problem, so I've also filed a bug with fedora.

Anybody got any ideas???

Developments so far.
I uninstalled wine completely, a week or so ago.
A few days after that, I used open office for the first time.
That also causes the same problem, writer, presentation and spreadsheet, all the same.
I've been updating, but haven't managed to catch up with all the latest due to my download limits.

Installed another copy of FC6 on a spare partition, without doing anything else, opened open office, and had shutdown problem.

Seems like X11 is partly shutting down, (inactive keyboard) but then stops.
Is there any log file, or lock file I can check???

Could it be a faulty DVD?
The "media check" said good.

Any other ideas of what is going on would be much appreciated.
