Cool Howto install internet explorer 6 in linux ( Shockwave & Flash Players)

I know this sound crazy but it works ( i run 64 bit ,limited browser extensions i.e flash) . you need Wine installed first.

this is the link to the fedora howto ( really easy )

http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/...llation:Fedora

#yum -y install wine*
#yum -y install cabextract

#wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/...-latest.tar.gz
#tar zxvf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
#cd ies4linux-*
#./ies4linux

take a look at what this page looks like with IE6

this link is the homepage for ies 4 linux

I've got shivers going down my spine. There are just some things you don't do. Some atrocities you don't commit. To steal a line from patrick norton "Tux, meet clippy, clippy meet tux. (TUX) : Ahhhhh!"

I don't like the Idea about IE in Linux , BUT the only resaon I still have windows is for one web site my wife goes to . Shockwave would be nice too. If this site works with this setup, Bye-bye windows for good. hahaha

PS: The whole Konqueror thing emulating IE just did not work.

This is good for web designers like me who are sick of FTPing a new design to my Windows box when I want to see it in IE.

Thanks!

True but why making it for IE. If it works in firefox then it should work in anything, right?

Hi if you dont like the idea of microsh*t , windows firefox 1.5 version also installs and plays flash and shockwave.

why, 64 bit linux is not supported at all by adobe so no shockwave or flash natively , I use wine anyway ,
here is the windows firefox howto

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Shockwave

Techmatt, I'll bet it's Pogo! I've made no headway with my wife even trying as long at that won't work. I gave the install a try and then bounced over to Pogo with high hopes but Pogo was complaining about missing java. Frankly, I'm a bit concerned about installing yet another version of Java for this and can't find anything corresponding to a 'plugins' directory to use the current java install. Anyone work this out?

I don't, and I don't think many other people do either. But the fact is, IE is the most popular browser at the moment, so we should make our websites work with it. I'm not saying "ZOMG! Get IES4LINUX now cause IE is the best browser is the WORLD!" I'm saying that it's good for people who want to make websites that work with 80-90% of personal computers.

To run shockware or flash , I would recommend windows firefox 1.5 as this gives a flicker free image for games/video. I am trying to get java to install in wine , but have to iron out a few bugs in installer.

Ok just a few things here. I installed IE 6 and have been having fun. I want more! I want windows update not to think I have Windows 98 installed but Windows XP. I want to use all my windows apps in Wine but for some reason the Wine desktop does not show my windows Icons or task bar and it only shows one program at a time. It terminates after the program running in it does. I want it to stay open longer. I also want links to windows programs on my Fedora Core 6 desktop to open using Wine. Only my .exe files do that now. I tried telling it to open from wine but I did not locate the WINE Windows Emulator in the programs to choose from. So what am I doing wrong? Oh ya it seems that the Wine desktop is shared with my Fedora Desktop. If thats true then is there a way to seperate the two or maybe I will just make a folder on my fedora desktop called WINDOWS WINE PROGRAMS AND SHORTCUTS?

I noticed it has a Windows 98 file configuration. Can I change this?

I located and changed the EXPLORER.EXE file to be opened by wine with windows 2000 mode but it still did not work. I'm not sure what I did. Explorer.exe still runs the same.
