why do gnome apps stop launching?

Hi, I have a bothersome problem when Iam in gnome.

When I select the applications from the menu on the gnome menus, sometimes none of them fail to launch.

Sometimes when this happens, I will see a rectangle in the bottom (ie, "Starting Terminal").

I'm running several applications at once, though not an enormous number. It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, I don't know what to do aside from logoff and on again.

Is there anything I can restart to overcome this.

I have lots of RAM on my laptop so I don't think that's the issue.

What's going on here? Any suggestions for how to take care of this?

I don't work in KDE, but this problem might cause me to reconsider.

Try to launch some applications from a terminal and check if there are any error messages reported when an app fails to load.

I am having a similar problem in GNOME. Never had it before. Seems to have started with the 2.6.17 kernel. I see people are complaining about 2.6.17, with problems that are similar enough to be suspicious. Try rolling back to 2.6.16.
