Exclamation Fedora Core 4 Command Line single user mode not working

Hi

This is a great site with so many questions already answered, I could clear some of the issues I was facing with FC4 [ Fedora Core 4 ] .

The system configuration is :

AMD Athlon 2400+ / 80 GB Seagate Baracuda / S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR Adapter [ on board chipset for display adapter ]

Problem : Installation went through smoothly, display settings got set correctly.
When I go to command line XTERM in GNOME it works fine , but when I take it to single user mode the text is all garbled and some weird colors crop-up.

Any one has encountered similar problem, if you can share your experiences, work-arounds it would be helpful.

I can't see any thing on command line in single user mode, but blindly if I type init 6 after some time it goes for a reboot.

Regards,

RamanaRao

According to http://freshmeat.net/projects/xterm/
The xterm program is the standard terminal emulator for the X Window System.

So in runlevel 1 no X server is running. Only in in runlevel 5.

Fedora Core 4 Single User Mode not working

Hi Brian1

Thanks for those links.

Here's my understanding :

In Single User Mode only the basic display through command line and the file systems mounted will be running.

All other drivers for Display / Xterm / Network / USB and all other drivers are not loaded at this run level.

So, incase if FC4 at single user mode is trying to run Xterm and is playing around with display, how to disable such things !

I find it quite funny for FC4 to try to run XTerm ( assuming that's what is happening ) at Single User Mode. It's not supposed to be running. Is this some kind of bug in FC4 !

Thanks and Regards,

RamanaRao

No idea on this one as to the issue.
Have you applied any updates yet? If not I would update it.
You can give this a try on a reboot hit the E key to edit the kernel boot line. Goto the end and add the number 1 to it. This will bring it to single user mode right off the bat. Does the display look fine?

Example:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17.4 ro root=/dev/hda9 vga=793 1
