Terminal prompt

It's not really a problem but when I open a terminal I'm greeted with:

bash-3.1$

When I SU to root it shows:

[root@Merlin wayne]#

On my son's fresh install of FC5 it shows:

[alex@Lucky ~]$

Apart from a few pickled brain-cells, am I missing something?

test the output of "echo $PROMPT_COMMAND" in your terminal as root and yourself. It's set in the file /etc/bashrc and possibly overwritten by your .bashrc in your home directory--if it exists...

Sounds like you lost your default .bashrc file in your home directory. You should have a default one there with the following in it which points to the bash shell template in /etc/bashrc.

Code:
# .bashrc

# Source global definitions
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
	. /etc/bashrc
fi

# User specific aliases and functions

Thanks, was just going to post that I'd fixed it by comparing the hidden files on my son's PC and found that file had got lost in action somewhere along the line
