fedora core 5 installation failed !

hi,
I am relatively new to Linux. I used to have winXP and mandriva on my PC.

As I install FC5 the, a while after the istallation has began the system reboots in the middle of the 1st or the 2nd CD giving no warning, as if I have pressed the reboot button.
I have checked the CDs for errors.

My PC is a P4 (2.4Ghtz), with Mercury 845 chipset, 256Mb RAM, std monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I have one 40Gb hard disc with 4 partitions, 3 with vfat and 1 with ext3. I have allocated a 9.5Gb partition with ext3 file sys for FC5, on which I previously had mandriva. During installation I have manually selected the partition to mount FC5. I have tried doing the minmalistic installation to save space.
I have tried using all the optons in the help but none has helped me.

I do not know what to do, either I am missing something simple or my hardware does not support.

Can somebody help me with this?

Hi,

Looks like no one has stepped up! I think because it sounds like a strange problem.

So you say the installation started O.K., graphical install came up, you chose the packages you want, etc., and then while you wait for everything to install, it suddenly reboots. Does it reboot at exactly the same place each time? What is it doing excatly just before it aborts???

hey thanks for the interest hope this gives u better idea--
ya, the graphical install came up, after choosing the packages..., the during the installation suddenly the computer reboots without any warning or error signal, as if I pressed the reset button. It is not exactly from the same stage( either during the 1st CD or the 2nd).

This is very strange indeed! I have never had this problem, and I have been installing many different versions of Linux since around 1996. Hmm. One thing you could try is to hit ALT-F3 or F4 during the install process. This will bring up a text display that displays exactly what is going on in the process. Watch very carefully and see what comes up just before the reboot.

But don'tgive up. Try a different distribution/computer if you must. I have never ever been tempted to use any other system since I went Linux ....
