i386 i586 i686

I don't understand what Arch i386 i586 and i686 following the packages mean. I installed FC5 from i386 iso images. However, accidentally downloaded and installed some packages including kernels of Arch i686. Could you please tell me what the effects of those packages of Arch 686 will have on my computer.

My computer is HP Pavilion zd8000, P4 CPU 3.0 GHz, Ram 1.0 GB, HD 100 GB

OK, I read the articles. It seems that I should install packages of i686, right?

Yes, when given the option for programs and for kernels, use the i686 for your machine. On many programs the i386 is all that's available and it would work fine for you in those cases.

It basically defines your processor type very generally. i686 optimizations might have new features comapred to i586, so that's why you have the versions. Any computer newer that 4 years old = i686 for sure.
i386 is the general name for any x86 (thats where the name comes from!) architecture, so that's why wether or not you're using i585 / i686 you get i386 ISO's.
