    Fedora 7 installation problems HELP

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me? I am a Linux newbie trying to install Linux on my PC.

I downloaded the Fedora 7 ISO DVD image and performed the hash check to make sure that the file was not corrupted before burning to DVD. (I followed the correct instructions to burn an ISO image to DVD)

    When I boot up using the DVD, the Fedora installation option screen appears. I choose the option 'Install or upgrade an existing system'. Then a black screen appears, with text running down it. It then freezes with the following line of text;

"Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init"

I have no idea what this means, or how I can remedy the situation. The installation DVD does not allow me to perform a media check before the installation option screen appears.

My PC is a Dell Dimension 2300 and I have 2 hard drives C: and E:. My Windows XP Home OS is installed on C:. I was planning to install Fedora on my E drive which has no OS currently installed on it.

    I would appreciate any help

    Thank you

I'm not sure about the error either.

There is a live CD you can try to boot instead, which also is installable.

I cannot help you but I also get a similar error (not quite the same); and have posted about it here:

If I find a solution I'll post it here as well to see if it helps you.

Perhaps you should try the livecd instead and see what happens. It went fine for me after some confusion.

Thank you everyone for your help - I will try the LiveCD and see what happens. I'll post again if that solves the problem

Hi, whilst trying to resolve a problem of my own I came across this which looks suspiciously like your problem. http://thenerdshow.com/index.php?page=installation give it a looksee, it might help :-)

Thanks but that mentions having the kernel error after the install. I am having this error before I can even get it installed. I have no partition to even mount. I dont get it, does everyone with my hardware have my issue or is it just me and why? Please help?

    Hi everyone,

I tried the LiveCD, and when I select 'Run from image' a load of text incessantly runs down a black screen. If I take the CD out, this still continues to happen!

I also tried typing 'linux noapic' from the DVD (full dist) at the boot menu and funny enough, instead of kernel panic, I get exactly the same problem as I got from my LiveCD!

Hmmm...I will try and look into this and see what I can find.

I doubt this will work for you but I fixed my similar, but not identical, problem by disabling the USB and Firewire devices in the BIOS.
It's probably worth a try at least.

hmm my motherboard has no firewire. As for usb, I have a usb mouse and keyboard so that may be an issue. This seems weird to me, I can load Vista, Windows XP no problems but fedora 7 which is newer doesnt even come close to working?? I dont get it, I thought open source software was better and faster at handling newer things.

Hey guys I downloaded the 32 bit and it works. Which begs the question, I have a Intel Core 2 E6600 which is 64bit so why doesnt the 64 bit version work?
