Fedora freezes suddenly; forced to..force shut down.

For those of you with this issue and running Nvidia. I saw in a post in another thread (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...4&postcount=77) a suggestion of adding the option "noapic" to the kernel command line.

I've been running Fedora with apic disabled for a couple of days now. I thought the lock ups were gone, but yesterday I got one. However, it was different from the ones before: I could always move the mouse cursor and got some response from the keyboard, for instance if I pressed the power off button I got the shut down menu, but not this time. So maybe it is working after all and this was something different.

Anyway, googling "noapic" shows that many people have fixed these freezes issues by disabling apic, so you might want to give it a try. On the other hand, I'm not sure what's the downside of disabling apic.

I have the same problem ...

fedora randomly freezes, i can move the mouse, keyboard does not work (ctrl+alt+backspace etc.), it is getting really annoying

I've done the extended test

 smartctl --test=long /dev/sda

And it passed with no errors.... I don't know what to do next.

Run memtest and smartmon.

Post dmesg and your logs in pastebin.

Please also list makes and models of your hardware, which kernel version, which video driver and its version. Also list time this issue began.

I don't think the issue is necessarily related with some problem with your disk, it is probably a bug in F10. Just check the forum to see the number of people affected, or see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=474948 as cxsfforum suggested. Actually, have you tried the noapic and acpi=off options on the kernel line? I'm running with noapic and the freezes seem to have disappeared.

I tend to agree here. I think it's a kernel but, but need proof. The current bug report is marked NEEDINFO. The info in the bug report is sketchy at best, making it impossible to replicate, and therefore impossible to patch/fix.

Sometimes when mine locks up it gives a kernel oops which I send off, the computer is generic running the openchrome video, and is a fresh install. Never had a problem with Fc5, Fc6 F7,F8 or F9 so what the heck happened?


Since I made this post I had to replace my motherboard, been running three days now with no lockups, and no kernels oops.

I'm using Fedora 10 64-bit, with all the latest upgrades.

I'm on a Sony VAIO, if the model would affect any answer please let me know.

For some reason, while I am working, Fedora will suddenly freeze up: no applications will do anything, but for some strange reason, my mouse can move. It can't do anything, none of the buttons respond except for the mouse (and the power button).

If there is something you'd like me to post, then I can do that.

Yes I have this same freezing problem. Im wondering if this bug/problem/error can be fixed before the release of Fedora 11. I have to accept it, it is better to work with a SO which has been a long time with us, because it is more updated and debugged. But this time, I have doubts...I cant wait so long for F11. The worst of all, Im starting to use Linux, so if U cant find the problem, my hope of doing it is less...

If you want to fix it add the following parameters to your kernel boot line (/boot/grub.conf)

noapic acpi=off

You can either do this by editing grub.conf and adding them permanently, or adding timeout to grub, so that you are able to control the kernel boot process and edit the line before the machine boots.

I believe that the problem will probably be fixed in the next few kernel updates (in F10)

As an alternative, if you don't want to disable acpi, you can try downgrading the kernel. This worked for me.

I had this problem when I booted into Gnome. That is nothing working except the mouse and rebooting the only way to get out of it.
It was happening perhaps once or twice a session, sometimes more.
I haven't read this whole thread but I just wanted to pass on that it seems to have gone away since switching to KDE?
Has anyone else shared this experience?

I can reproduce the problem by taking a window, resizing it multiple times quickly without releasing the mouse button. When I release the mouse button, the system hangs, and the cursor does not change, but the cursor still follows the mouse movements. I have done this with every config I have found as a fix on this forum including older kernels, and the two fixes noted in the title.

I have been experiencing the same issue for some time now...
Since it is spring break, i decided to remove vista off my Toshiba Satellite laptop, and install F10 on it. I've customized it so much, and love a lot of things about it, but one of my BIGGEST ANNOYANCES is that it freezes unexpectadly, right in the middle of me doing something, and the only solution is a hard reboot.

the last time i had this issue was 20 minutes ago, while moving a VLC window that was playing a HD movie... =( it's very annoying...VERY.

If anyone finds a solution, please post it up here..
