Good on ya for hammering through - but as has been pointed out, ya kinda set yourself up for it. Yea, I did too - but it's on purpose, right? One of the better ways I know of to motivate my lazy ass to learn a few more things.

OK, ok, so I'm a bit of a masochist - sue me.

Using FC in on stuff that's gotta work is asking for it - but what a hell of a ride

Part of what makes Fedora exciting for me is that it's updated all the time and when something new comes out, we get it pretty quickly.
Oh really? Why then aren't we going to get Firefox 2.0?

I need Firefox 2.0 to use a new extension (Zotero) for my research. I guess I'm stuck using Windows as my primary machine until Fedora 7 comes out. I'm not happy.

Do you still think Fedora is cutting edge?

fc6 is begining to really suck for me.

it was supposed to be the "Polished fc5", its worse.

im seeing errors i have never seen in my entire life, and i have been using linux of yrs.

for the first time in my life Anaconda doesnt work properly, all the colours are messed up, i mean really bad like a broken TV.
    and the list goes on.
now i have this new disease, where i have to first kill evolution-data-something before i can open evolution.

wat the hell is going on?

Dratliffe, if you want to use FF2, simply download it and extract and use it out of your /home (or wherever) folder until an update comes along. Then you can delete the Home version and continue on.

Cruise, I've got just the opposite experience. Everything's working better than ever, I have 3D and AIGLX running simultaneously without artifacts and one game that hasn't worked in any other distro is running perfectly. But, that's how it is with linux; you just can't get it all right for everyone it seems. Just gave Sabayon a test run and liked what I saw but had an nvidia problem. The developer immediately sent a message 'that just shouldn't happen' but no fix was found. Oh well - guess it works for the other 99%.

Cruise, yes - clean install even though I had the T's running on it. Funny thing was that my custom install failed the first time - just the >Grub entry and that took over 3 hours. Second try was successful, but even abbreviated custom install took over 2 1/2 hours. Good thing I'm retired!

So, as I said on the other thread, give some thought to trying a live CD or two and see if other distros are more pleasing right now. I know you've been with FC a long time and a fresh install might do a lot of it for you, but in the end, it's really all good and all linux.

Maybe you should read this: Screaming Users Considered Good
    http://headrush.typepad.com/creating...ing_users.html

Fedora apologists won't make Fedora better.

Do you realize there's currently no plans to include Firefox 2.0 as an update to Fedora Core 6.
    http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedor.../msg00624.html

Do you really think it is acceptable for a leading Linux distribution to lag so far behind having an update to the leading open source browser?

I've invested a lot of time learning Fedora and RHEL and I want them to succeed. Ignoring an update to Firefox is not the way to success. Something is wrong in Fedorasville.

Fedora Core 6 became obsolete two days after it was released (when it failed to have an update for Firefox 2.0).

Does anyone else find it sadly ironic that I need to run Windows XP or Mac to run the latest version of an open source browser?

Running rawhide to get FF 2.0 is not acceptable.

Installing the RPM supplied by mozilla.org is not acceptable. There's obviously a reason that Fedora Project customizes Firefox for Fedora, otherwise they would use upstream too.

If it's so unacceptable, then you have several options:
    (a) Use Mozilla's rpm. It's not like it's that hard to do, just:
    Code:
    rpm -Uhv firefox*
    (b) Use the FF2 tarball
    (c) Just run:
    Code:
    yum --enablerepo=development update firefox
    to ged Fedora's Firefox 2.0 for FC7
    (d) Stop complaining and use another distro
    You choose.

    The choices you presented are:

    (a) Use Mozilla's rpm.

I feel this is wrong because if upstream RPM was satisfactory, Fedora Project would just use it in the first place. Therefore, Mozilla's rpm must be unsatisfactory.

    (b) Use the FF2 tarball

Unsatisfactory for same reasons as A. Besides, this bypasses the package management infrastructure of my Linux distribution.

    (c) Just run:

    Code:
    yum --enablerepo=development update firefox
I'm scared that doing so will destabilize my Fc6 system -- that it will bring along many unstable libraries. Has anybody had success with this option?

    (d) Stop complaining and use another distro

    You mean like these folks:
    http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubunt...o=all&date=all

Complaining is a form of community participation. Fedora needs more, not less.

I care about Fedora, hence I speak up when I see it making a bad decision (deciding not to update FF to 2.0).

Do you support the Fedora Project's decision to not update FF to 2.0 for Fc6?

Dustin, I think you'd have better luck taking this up with the developers rather than the users/community. I know you're trying to help, but with the tactics you're using, all you're going to get here is some stern sideways looks and a few kindly phrased invitations to put a sock in it.

So... There is a method to file bug reports. Use it.

If you just want to offer some advise to the developers, try joining their mailing lists. You can find the lists by surfing and hunting around www.fedora.redhat.com. Hit "Contribute", and then find "Communicate." They can use all the help they can get.

Hope this helps. And it might keep you from getting your nose skinned again!

What's wrong with using a third party RPM of FF2? I do so now under FC5 for the very reason it DOESN'T come from the official repos and does not need pango as a dependency therefore is faster (prolly more stable too?)

Why?; i think it is more than a little silly to assume that just because an rpm is made for a distro that it is better; what evidence do you have to back this up? Just a gut feeling?

    the best way to ensure everything will work on your system, with the best proformance and compatilbility is to compile from source (option b); you dont have to bypass the package management system if you use checkinstall;
do a "yum install checkinstall" then when compiling a package do "./configure" then "make" then "checkinstall" and that will make it into an .rpm instead of installing it, then you can use rpm to install it; that is the best way to ensure that things will work; the reason most people dont do that is that it is not convienent
