missing network connection

Just so you know you're not alone. I updated FC15 Thursday and after a reboot I was greeted with the same networking message "The system network services are not compatible with this version"

I am currently searching out a resolution. From here https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=696278 it seems that some config files may have been improperly updated.

Well, the bug linked is closed, and I have the same problem after updating Fedora 15. My Fedora 15 installation is vanilla except some non-free codecs and Adobe flash, updating should not break network. This is very bad.

and the bad point is that usually the bugs can be fixed by updating the system to the newer version but in this case we do not have network and should do the repair manually. i hope the method and/or the fixed package is announced somewhere like here!

I found a temporally workaround.

Attach Ethernet cable, then:

sudo dhclient em1

Downgrade update:

sudo yum downgrade NetworkManager-glib NetworkManager NetworkManager-gnome

Reboot.

One question, does packages break often in Fedora when updating?

..so network manager did not break for you after update? It was the case for me because downgrading got it working again.

This happened to my laptop as well. One of the most vital packages when you want to know how to fix something and it's the one not working. I can only image what's it like for people with only 1 computer.

Same thing happened to me.

I did a preupgrade upgrade - all worked fine but same result - no network after reboot and cannot config NM.

As posted to another similar issue F15 team please give us some advice - if no advice will have to backgrade and that would be a first as I have been a Fedora user through all the pain from Redhat.


This is going to really hurt what otherwise is a fine release.

Good to hear this is not to be expected at least. I started to feel worry this was common when I did not find much information on this at first. It's many hours since the NM update was released. I hope we'll hear some details soon.

Network Not Online

If you did NOT select Configure Network during CD/DVD installation, then the network will not be online by default. To fix this, make either of the following changes:

Option 1: EDIT: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-pXpY and change ONBOOT=no to ONBOOT=yes.

Option 2: In Gnome, [Right-Click] on the Networking icon in the top left of the toolbar.
Select Edit Connections....
Select System pXpY and click Edit...
Check Connect automatically and click Apply.
Enter 'root' password when prompted.

Note: Due to changes in Fedora 15, network device names are no longer named as eth devices. They will use pXpY where the X and Y are numbers which correspond to your specific system's pci slot number and port number. Hence network device names may be different among different hardware.

I have bitten the bullet and done a complete clean re-install for Fedora 14.

My reasons (not in order):

1. Network Manager - I was just not confident I could get all the issues with from basic eth0 (now pXpY) wireless, VPN solved and stable
2. Rythmbox was crashing
3. I use the Gnome 2 Locations function everyday
4. Mumble had microphone issues
5. the current way of jumping between and seeing Workspaces in Gnome 3 is very awkward - bring back Panel!!
6. I couldn't get file management to display in List mode - Icons take up too much screen space
7. No direct screen label to Shutdown is just another awkward inconvience.

Not a complete but not a big list.

I love the Gnome 3 interface but is it just too dumbed down?

I noticed really worthwhile performance gains.

It is such a pity that apart from the big issues with NM there are such irritations as no Shutdown on the User Panel.

I will grab a spare desktop and do a clean install but for my main laptop I think I will wait until Gnome 2 and NM is working properly.

However I'm not convinced that it is a permanent fix. I've determined that this may all be related to SELinux. Unfortunately, I haven't had time (Due to the holiday) to sit down and really research this.

I'm about to follow in the steps of Kiwicraig and reinstall 14. I personally love the new design of the gnome3 desktop but I have other issues that will keep me from switching over. For one, Empathy doesn't seem to like yahoo messenger names that contain special characters. WTF. Who was the one who thought it would be a good idea to regex the login of Empathy? (They were wrong) (o:

I personally came to Fedora after many years of [K]Ubuntu | Mandrake (Mandriva). So far I haven't been impressed, but hearing that this is not the norm, I will stick it out for a while. Hopefully the next set of updates to 15 will solve the rest of the problems WITHOUT introducing new ones

i downgraded the packages (which needed downloading 3 packages) and now it works fine. does anybody know if the fixed packages are in the repo?
