Installing XEN with Fedora 11... Need help

    Hi

I have been only using the free vmware server thus far for my virtualization

I have recently installed Fedora 11 and am currently looking at using the XEN virtualization software.

I am currently running and upgrade from F10 to Fedora 11 with the PAE kernel. Also I am using KDE 4 with kmod-nivida drivers.

Now here is what I have done

To install Virtualization requirements I did the following:
    sudo yum groupinstall 'Virtualization'

    I then also did:
sudo yum install kvm qemu libvirt python-virtinst

    I then installed xen:
    sudo yum install xen*

Now, I read that i needed "kernel-xen" but it doesn't appear to exists
a "yum list kernel*' only displays kernel packages and the kernel PAE pakages

    so I figured I don't need it
I then started all the xen services and libvirtd service

Opened virt-manager and added a new connection: hupervisor: Xen and connection: local

    I get the following error:
Unable to open connection to hypervisor URI 'xen:///':
<class 'libvirt.libvirtError'> unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused
    None

I guess my question now is... what is the difference between the hypervisor: QEMU/KVM and XEN. Because I seem to be able to create a VM using this.

My VM is an XP vm for work purposes to run some windows only software

I would like to use XEN as I just have my mind set on it but I might just be ignorant and on the wrong track

Thus my second question is, is there a how to guide for fedora 11 and xen? the fedora 7 guide i found needs the kernel-xen installed.

Qemu, for me, was painless to install.

    service libvirtd start

and I ran it on the same session as I installed it on.

From what I've been reading though, Xen uses modded this in the guest and that to provide a much better performing machine, whereas qemu from what I can tell tends to run them as their native forms.

    Go to http://www.xen.org/

It will tell you all the dependencies needed for Xen. All these dependencies are in Fedora excpept one. You need a processor that has Virtual Tech built in. Either AMD or Intel.

    still no luck

    I checked the requirements
    and installed :
sudo yum install iproute bridge-utils binutils gcc zlib python-devel zlib-devel

also I checked my CPU and its all good

also this is the output of egrep '(vmx|svm)' --color=always /proc/cpuinfo

flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe nx lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdcm lahf_lm tpr_shadow

    Any ideas?

    Also
I am getting the following error for xm

ERROR Internal error: Could not obtain handle on privileged command interface (2 = No such file or directory)
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/sbin/xm", line 8, in <module>
    from xen.xm import main
    File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/xen/xm/main.py", line 61, in <module>
    xc = xen.lowlevel.xc.xc()
xen.lowlevel.xc.Error: (1, 'Internal error', 'Could not obtain handle on privileged command interface (2 = No such file or directory)')

I read somewhere the following quote which measn nothing to me, some explanation would be good:

"Fedora 9 and 10 don't ship a dom0 kernel anymore. The Xen kernel that they ship can only be used for a domU. "

    Yes, Fedora 11 (and 10 and 9) don't support Dom0.

This means you cannot use a Fedora 11/10/9 machine as a Xen host. You can't run other OSes with xen on it. You can only run them as guest (DomU) under another Xen host.

Since your processor supports vmx, you should consider using kvm instead.

Sorry for the long wait... have been busy

    So:
    DomU = guest VM
    Dom0 = host

    Is this correct?

What is the point then of being able to install xen then if you can't host any VM's?

I do can host almost any PV ( obviously HVM ) DomU. View :-
    http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/121777/index.html (Setup F11 DomU)
    http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/121514/index.html (Setup Solaris PV DomU)
    http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/120711/index.html (Setup Ubuntu Jaunty DomU)
All this setups don't use either virt-manager or virt-install. They utilize technology of 2 pygrub's profiles.
First - installation one, second - runtime one. Basic details may be viewed at :-
    http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/112300/index.html.
Libvirt & libvirt-python & python-virtinst is nice have been built and up and running.
    See for instance:-
    http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/120005/index.html
RH did it for F10,F11 (xen-3.3.1-11.fc11.src.rpm). Gitco.de for CentOS 5.3(3).
However, it's not required to build PV DOMUs in graphical mode at Xen Hosts
All Ubuntu 8.04.1 aka Hardy Xen Hosts don't have virt-install properly working with Xen Hypervisor.
    Then what ?

Well, there are folks working on it, and so it should work again sometime.
You could also I suppose boot from a kernel that does support it and use the xen userspace package.

Citrix is working on pvops kernel. It's not a secret.View:- http://lwn.net/Articles/335812/
If you would closely watch xen-devel mailing list archives, you would not be too much optimistic
regarding Xen Dom0 Support merge Mainline Linux. The most recent Linus Torvald's posts to mentioned list
    are pretty clear negative.
Regarging Xen 3.4.1 port to F11 compatible with libvirt ( libxenstore doesn't work after install
    xen-3.4.0-f12.src.rpm via my experience ) it's a question of 1-2 month.View:-

I have installed Xen 3.4 on Fedora 11. And the VMs work well in our clusters. A detailed tutorial is posted here:

Re: Installing XEN with Fedora 11... Need help

A whole Xen solution including Dom0 DomU installation and configuration:
    http://fclose.com/b/2367/xen-solutions/

    Dom0:http://fclose.com/b/2405/setting-up-...-in-fedora-12/
    DomU:http://fclose.com/b/2256/setting-up-...ith-xen-4-0-0/

These two are tested in our cluster and are the current solution for our platform.
