Fedora 10 - Random Lock up

I am having the same lockups. My hardware: Asus M2N4-SLI , Athlon X2 5000, 4 GB ram, Nvidia 7300. I am running x86_64.

Sometimes the system pauses momentarily. Sometimes the GUI locks up. When it locks up, sometimes I can SSH in and reboot, sometimes I can't. The lockups seem to be worse in gnome than in XFCE4. I also tried KDE and got lockups. In both KDE and gnome I had desktop effects turned off. I also have added the nomodeset kernel option. nomodeset seems to make the crashes less frequent, but they still happen. One other thing I have noticed is that I sometimes have a partially garbled display in Firefox. It happens during scrolling.

This exact hardware was solid in F6 and F8, both i386.

I had the same problem as everyone here, including evaldes' garbled text..in my case, garbled text in a terminal window. And yes, this hardware was solid on Fedora 7.

I'm on a Dell SC1430, dual quad, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 8800GT. After trying two things:
1) upgrading my software to the latest version
2) trying nohpet on the kernel command line

I still got the lockups. With or without Gnome loaded. Last Thursday, I disable apic (ie, added "noapic" on the kernel command line. And for the past three days, I have had no lockups.

So now, I will need to dig a little deeper and/or file a proper bug to understand why adding "noapic" seemingly resolved the issue.

I had similar problems.

The fix in my case was to switch from "radeon" xorg driver to "radeonhd".

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem with my Toshiba L300 laptop. The fix for the problem was to update to newer video drivers. As stated at http://intellinuxgraphics.org/ (check the note at 2008-10-20: freeze fixed), a compile and install of that driver did the trick.

Don't think its the firefox which is causing issues here. I tried to install Oracle 10g on Fedora 10 and am getting the same lock up issues. I just tried to unzip and it froze up.

Now it's happening at random. does anyone have a solution. H/w config are as follows:

1. AMD64
2. ATI Radeon Chipset
3. 1 G.B RAM

As per my post above, "noapic" on the kernel startup line in /etc/grub.conf solved it for me. I left my box on for more than a week and it had no lockups or reboots.

Ok, thanks, I somehow didn't realize from your post that you were using Nvidia. I'll try your suggestion.

I think it has something to do with the radeon driver with the RADEON Express 200m. My laptop has experienced the same thing and I am trying to figure out what the differences are between the f9 and f10 version of the radeon driver.

Same thing here with a mobility ati 2600. The only thing I can do is hit the power button and wait 60 seconds for it to shutdown. Mouse dissapears and ctrl alt backspace etc.. does nothing.

I have newest cat 9.2 drivers and I tried reinstalling them like another thread suggested but still locks up.

I don't think it is an ATI card issue, I am using NVIDIA 9800GT with the latest NVIDIA drivers, i.e. NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.29-pkg2.run and the machine hangs.

This is really unacceptable behaviour as machines are completely unstable!

Redhat/Fedora support Team should regard this BUG as URGENT and HIGH priority!!!

I tried noapic on 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.x86_64, and still get lockups (I use NVIDIA 180.29 driver which self-compiles using the NVIDIA driver)
