Fedora Core 10 - Best EVER ?

I think so. Very smooth upgrade of a dual booted system. Detected all hardware on my top of the range Sony laptop (VGN-TZ31WN).

Audio working, flash plugin working, backup of evolution & firefox all went smoothly. I think this IS the best release ever.

What's more amazing is that getting WinXP to work on the laptop is a real ball ache. Audio driver doesn't work unless you have SP3 installed. Which of course, the driver doesn't check for or tell you anything about.

Oustanding and DEFINATELY the best release yet!

I agree. This is the best Fedora release ever for all my PCs. There used to be two major pieces of hardware I had that wouldn't work in Fedora: the Atheros wireless card in my laptop, and my Logitech QuickCam. Now both the wireless and the cam work right out-of-the-box with F10 without requiring any additional installation of anything whatsoever.

Windows is way behind on the kernel hardware support. With both my desktop and laptop: audio doesn't work, ethernet doesn't work, video card acceleration doesn't work, modems don't work, and on the laptop wireless doesn't work, until drivers are installed. It's ridiculous. And all of this stuff just simply works with Fedora.

Yeah....I agree. This may be the best release ever! I had a few problems with Pulse Audio and the Xine backend with KDE, but I switched to GStreamer and it is better. Sound was crackly. I read somewhere that Phonon + Pulse Audio + Xine is not 100% stable.

I wouldn't call F10 the best ever (I think FC4 was), but it's a big improvement over F9, which was unusable for me. It's restored my faith in Fedora.

I installed on a Pent IV 865BGF with intel graphic 2, 3GB memory replacing F9.
I used ext4 and reformated /home on a LVM lv on sdb1 and put the system on LVM lv on sda2 (with lots of VG free.
The sda LVM was redone because I ...

deleted Windows Xp partitions.

Did the usual first and second boot stuff.
Updated to kernel 130 and it is running smooth and quit.
I saved all the VDI's on another LV on sdb2.

Hear, Hear! Well said! I upgraded from F8 to F10. Other than some minor glitches, F10 has been running smoooooth.

ehh, the jury is still out, I haven't generally had too many problems with fedora. Ten is overall pretty nice but there is one "large" problem. Running the compositor on my intel card leads to ridiculously choppy performance, 9 was much faster than this.

Not to sure but I'm having problems with my nvidia 7150M graphics card. Until I get it working, can't say how best ever it is. Fedora 8 was a very good distro for me.

Downloaded F10 last night (as well as Mint 32 bit, just in case :-)
I did a default install, with exception of manual partitioning). Went smooth, and did an undate right after the first boot. PackageKit still does not impress me. Installed YUMEX, and uninstalled PackageKit. Tried out yum to make sure it worked okay, and then set up prefs in Firefox. The having to fiddle around to get root bugged me, but thanks to ddolphin's post, made short shrift of that problem. I could not get gdm to run in a terminal, even with su and su -. So installed gnome-system-display (think that is the name?), and ran that. I could then turn off the laptop screen and use only the external monitor. (The longer the laptop screen runs, the more vertical lines show up..the count is now up to 52). Eventually, it will die. I notice the darn things turns on in boot now, and later switches off. I imagine that is the result of the new vid. server. I tried to get gnome-system-display to generate a xorg.conf file, but no joy there. Not sure if this is a permissions problem, or maybe I am doing it wrong?
Wireless worked without major cajoling this time...good. Nautilus would not run under su or su - for some reason...The error smacked of Policy Kit...but once I could log in as root, that problem is a non issue.
I just installed the pan newsreader, but I am not sure it will run properly, since it is X based, and there is no X anymore. Any ideas on that anyone?
All in all, not too bad an experience. Now...how long will it take for a security update to break things? I am having recollections of F8 having to get a security update of the kernel, and had the wireless and the video break. I am keeping the Mint cd handy for if and when that happens.

I agree Fedora 10 is the best ever. The only glitch I had during installation was having to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to point to the module path to get my Nvidia video card to work properly. I didn't have to do that with previous versions of Fedora. But perhaps the reason was that I used RPM Fusion rather than the Livna repository to get the drivers.

How did you go about pointing nvidia module to the correct path? I'm having similar issues. Right now I have to use the 'vesa' driver.

How did you get an xorg.conf generated. I tried both as root and user, and no joy...I rpm'd system-config-display, ran it both in terminal, and in gui...still no xorg.conf in etc/X11 directory. Any hints? ATI 9600 and 32 bit F10.
