irq 19: nobody cared error

Hi,

I've just installed F9 (x86_64) without problems until the machine reboots. After the initial "Red Hat nash......." line I receive:

irq 19: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
handlers:

Disabling IRQ #19

and then the system hangs.

While the irqpoll option does work (I've added it to grub.conf), I never had this problem with F8 on the same machine and I don't want to have to append irqpoll myself in grub.conf every time the kernel gets an update.

Any suggestions?

Not that it helps you but I had the problem in F8 when I went from 64 to 85...... F9 doesn't need it at the moment though...

I'm 99% sure that kernel updates keep your custom params, I use vga=773, to get a nice text-mode res, and it survives kernel updates.

Thanks to a new kernel update, I've just found you are correct, it does keep them.

However, I read somewhere on the internet that the irqpoll option slows down the system in some way. Does it just slow the boot time, I can live with that, but if it also slows the system in general, I can't.

I think the error is related to two of the built in card readers on the computer, two of them are detected fine, but the SD/MMC and xD card slots don't work. I know for certain they all worked in F8.

I have the same error with the same results (hang) on Fedora 9 (64bit):

With irqpoll works fine, but I would prefer to boot without it (I've read that it slows network and so).

I updated BIOS and send mail to my motherboard vendor and get expected answer:
Unfortunately DFI does not offer support for issues relating to non MS operating systems on our commercial products. Please contact your Linux supplier for further assistance.

So is it a kernel bug or a hardware problem?

Just got my nice new Dell M4400 with Vista and some (paid for) unpartitioned space for my real os, Fedora 9. The live cd doesn't work - X fails to start. So I went with the boot CD and install DVD and was able to get through the installation.

After the install, and some bad guesses by the Fedora installer as to which partition Vista was living in, I've recovered my Vista boot capability via grub by correcting its choice of which partition to boot.

However, when Fedora boots I'm getting this irq 19 problem. I noticed the "try irqpoll" kernel option so I did that. Fedora now boots, but life is not good. The touchpad barely works, no network hardware was installed, so it looks like this workaround is not working so well.

Are there any suggestions out there on how to properly fix this? I see there is some discussion about a new kernel? Any help is greatly appreciated...

Hi, I forgot to post "a solution" for my problem:
the problem was in BIOS, to be more precise something in IDE "feature". I put AHCI mod and reinstall Fedora and now everything works perfectly - no more irqpoll option. AHCI is open standard so there is a good support for Linux. But be warned: probably you will have to reinstall Windows Vista as well.

I think that those other problems of yours are not in correlation with irqpoll... maybe it's something else: google your hardware with linux?

Someone tried the parameter: irqfixup instead of irqpoll, give it a try to see if it works better for you (or if it works at all...)

I hate it when these threads end with no resolution. The M4400 is up and running just fine with Fedora 9, almost.

The livna repo needs to be added to the updater. Eventually, I got the nvidia driver that worked fairly well. However, on bootup sometimes the system hangs in the process of bringing up X. Other signs of trouble are easy to find when you connect a second monitor and start using the extended desktop.

I've kept the irqpoll option in an extra grub.conf entry, although I'm using it rarely now. The wired network drivers also required updating - originally the magic was to get a working network connection for updates, which ended up being a USB to ethernet port on a docking bay from a completely different laptop. Even an old PCMCIA Linksys (Broadcom) card wouldn't work out of box.

Still not working: wireless Dell 1397. Oh well. irq 19 problems still remain I think, and perhaps there will be a kernel issue for this system.

For all that I like about Fedora, the crumbling network architectures and FUD around GPL are now really keeping Linux distros (I hear all the Ubuntu folk are suffering too) from succeeding where they always have, ease of network integration. Its funny how proprietary solutions keep creeping back.

I have to wonder, why don't these guys want me to buy their hardware? Releasing their drivers won't compromise their sales until long after the market has moved on, and by then it will help provide a support solution.
