Apache DDoS attacks

How does one deal with these?
We're talking web server based. Primitive. Reloading a website over and over. But very effective.

Sample from logs:

Same attack again, no advice on how to at least lessen the effect? As i said, its basically a whole load of clients reloading our index page over and over.

Looking at HTTPD logs - its several clients making HTTP requests over and over. To certain images and web pages etc. Very primitive DOS attack ("script kiddy" type thing comes to mind) but i'm unsure...

So i have a VPS which is running HTTPD, and its getting blown to bits by a DOS Attack.
Turns out mod_evasive is totally useless (due to not running a total - rather counting per child process) and...

Can't compile - "skipping incompatible"

After searching for ages, i finally found a 'working' port of HLLib for linux.

Not sure exactly on how updates work for apache, but for example 2.2.13 was a security release build, i figured being 10 versions behind isnt a good idea.

Scratch this, godaddy's SSH access is so restricted its completely useless. No /bin/ftp. No /bin/bzip2. Wget won't ftp anything whether it has a password or not.
