SSH and Telnet can be enabled in FirewallD with commands:

firewall-cmd --enable --service=ssh
firewall-cmd --enable --port=23:tcp

However these won't persist over reboot in F16. According to...

I also wrote simple test case which checked the _hasPrimary value, and noticed that it was set to true only when AC was unplugged.

So even when battery menu is available but laptop is plugged,...

Is that If -block at the top level in the file?

If it is, I guess that _statusArea or panel may not be defined yet at that point. Try to put it inside function init() {} or function enable() {}.
