Very disappointed in F10
I have used Redhat/Fedora since Redhat 6.2. I believe I have used every version of Fedora. F10 has been a big disappointment. I have not had as much trouble with an OS since Windows 98. My list of issues is as follows:
1st Attemp: IBM X31 laptop
- F10 installed and ran just fine. First update fubars X or gnome, not sure which. The system would never bring up the graphical login. None of the Xconfig tricks worked. Tired Ubuntu 8.10 on the same box, no issues. I dislike some of the goofiness in Ubuntu, so I went to F9. System runs flawlessly with F9.
2nd Attmept: Asus M2N4-SLI , Athlon X2 5000, 4 GB ram, Nvidia 7300
- F10 X86_64 installed OK but I immediately began getting lockups. The screen would freeze but the mouse pointer would still move. Or the gui would completely freeze. CTRL-ALT backspace or CTRL-ALT-F1 would not work. I could still ssh into the box and restart it. I set the nomodeset and quiet all_generic_ide=1 kernel options which helped a lot, but I still get freezes in gnome. I have switched to KDE, but the interface is so awkward that it is almost unusable. I may have to try XFE or something else. I also had Network Manager refuse to use static IPs, but I simply killed it and configured the network manually. This same box ran F6 and F8 flawlessly.
I have two other desktops and a laptop running F9 with no issues. It is obvious from my experience and from reading the forums that F10 is a big let down. This is the poorest quality release to date. If this continues, Fedora will certainly begin to lose users. I am considering switching to Ubuntu with my systems as the updates for the current versions become unavailable.
Fedora isn't for everybody, and it's all Linux anyway, so brand loyalty is not required. Here's the link you'll need.
Thanks for trying F10, and I hope Ubuntu works for you. If not, try MINT. Several of our members are having great luck with it.
That being said, I'm closing this thread to avoid the inevitable firestorm it will -- and was probably designed -- to generate.
Thanks for expressing yourself, however you should realize that the Forum is users helping users, and not the devs. If you want to make yourself heard by the parties who can make changes, then by all means join and post here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate
If you have a question or need assistance, we're happy to help, but otherwise, to prevent backlash by the millions of satisfied users, and things just getting 'ugly' this thread's closed.
Edit: Ah, sorry, Dan - I see you had similar thoughts.
Ah! Great minds think alike! <..:D..>
Note that regression can happen on any system. Perhaps that user was unlucky.
