Fedora 9 x86_64 MacBook - No DVD playback

Hi,

Does anybody else has Fedora 9 installed on their MacBook 4,1 and experiencing problems with DVD playback?

I can't get any DVDs to play, Handbrake doesn't work and Totem gives the error: could not read from resource.

Is there any more info I can give to get help? I've got libdvdcss and libdvdread installed...

Thanks

Have you tried MPlayer? It has pretty good dvd support.

There are a few options to choose from.

Command line interface:
Code:

yum install mplayer
gui front-end:
Code:

yum install mplayer-gui
another front-end(my preference):
Code:

yum install smplayer
And a very simple gnome front-end:
Code:

yum install gnome-mplayer
You can also try VLC. DVD's worked out of the box for me.
Code:

yum install vlc
Then you can use File>Open Directory or File>Open Disc
Hope this helps.

Seems to work fine for me... Have you installed libdvdcss and the bunch?

Yeah, I've got libdvdcss and libdvdread installed. Just tried VLC as well which has always worked for me in the past (on other systems) and that failed for me too, but it did prompt a "kernel oops" message, which I promptly sent off to kerneloops.org - hopefully that will help a little.

Any ideas about how can I further investigate the cause of this and get it fixed? I might open a bug in bugzilla, but would rather go with all the information I can...

Thanks for the replies :)

Jon

Can you post the oops here?

I can't get it to repeat the oops actually, but it still fails to play the disc in VLC. I opened it from the terminal and these are the error messages I get:

Quote:

VLC media player 0.8.6h Janus

It carries on with the cdda access error for ages, just increasing the number by one.

Does the dvd mount when you insert it? Can you browse the files on the disc?

jonrobenator 15th June 2008 10:51 AM

Yeah the disc mounts and I can browse the files fine. All data discs work with no troubles...

Try this:

Backup your grub settings

As root:
Code:

cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst_orig
Now open the settings file:
Code:

gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Find this line(yours may be slightly different):
Code:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25.4-30.fc9.i686 ro root=UUID=d19c06a7-8b1e-49e1-95a6-426922efbd73 rhgb quiet
And add this line to the very end of it: "all_generic_ide"

For example, this is what mine would look like:
Code:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25.4-30.fc9.i686 ro root=UUID=d19c06a7-8b1e-49e1-95a6-426922efbd73 rhgb quiet all_generic_ide
Save and reboot.

Hope this works.
