fortunately most Radeon graphics cards are not from ATI and not called ATI anymore. In the ATI era, the support for these cards under Linux were even considerable worse :Y

IMHO for most people who don't play advanced games under Linux, the open source driver of Radeon cards 3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx series cards is pretty decent and satisfying. Well ok if it's a medium or high power card it would be a pretty bad solution for mobile computers, but otherwise it should be overall rather satisfying.

Laptop users rarely have a choice in what graphics card they get.

12.6 is the last version of catalyst that will support the Radeon HD 4xxx series, right?

No, 12.6 supports hd5xxx + only.

Also, note that 12.6 is currently beta, and not a standard release. However, it seems to be working well with my Radeon HD 7850.

Right. The proprietary catalyst driver dropped support for it in 12.6. Here's the list of cards that were supported in 12.4 and are no longer supported in 12.6:
  • R600 Radeon HD 2900
  • RV610/RV630 Radeon HD 2400/2600, M71, M72, M74, M76
  • RV620 Radeon HD 3450/3470, M82
  • RV635 Radeon HD 3650/3670, M86
  • RV670 Radeon HD 3850/3870, M88
  • RS780 Radeon HD 3100/3200/3300
  • RS880 Radeon HD 4100/4200/4290
  • RV710 Radeon HD 4350/4550/5145/530v/545v, M92
  • RV730 Radeon HD 4650/4670/5165/550v/560v/565v, M96, M96-XT
  • RV770 Radeon HD 4850/4870, M97, M98

that is really bad. What do I do now? With the public driver lots of stuff like Skype, firefox, etc (when watching video) use too much of processor and my laptops runs reaaly hot.

Hell will freeze over before ATI updates a legacy driver IMO.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTExMzU

In the unlikely event that they actually do it I will update the F16 branch so that F17 users with legacy hardware can use it.
As for the F16 branch, I have blocked it from being updated to 12.6 as this would be unfair for legacy hardware owners.

Does anyone have a list of packages that should *NOT* be updated with yum (i.e., added to the exclude list in yum.conf) when running the catalyst driver? Obviously you don't want to update to an unsupported kernel, but there must be other stuff, too, because if I've run yum update and then had to uninstall/reinstall the catalyst driver because something broke.

(Note that my installation of the catalyst driver was not done with yum/rpm, but with the AMD installer.)

next time I buy a laptop I will specifically take care not to have ATI card. It has been such a pain ...
