The extent of my DVD watching consists of 20 minutes per day while I ride an exercise machine, but I have watched quite a variety of DVDs, playing them on a portable with VLC under FC 12. There are some DVDs where the sound track is faint. (example: Chemistry part 1,2,3 by "The Standard Deviants").

I don't understand why this should happen. This shouldn't be a analog problem with the physical DVD disk itself, correct? The sound is in a digital format, so it must be a problem with how the whole sound track was recorded. Or can an error in one or two bits on the disk set the playboack volume wrong?

Is there a way this setting can be changed? I've searched this forum and others pretty thoroughly, but the last spate of related problems seem to be from around Fedora 5/6, and the way in which optical drives are handled seems to have changed, in that they no longer appear in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab.

Thank you in advance.

... Which by all rights, in F11, wouldn't be a problem. But, this is F16 on this drive.

the 411:

Suspending the system for the night works great! But, the problem you see is that in F16, all you have to do is tap a key on the keyboard to un-suspend the system. Which leads me to the cat problem. She just ain't all that careful about where she walks at night.

Which means, most of the time, she steps on a key or keys, and the system then dutifully un-suspends. And me, who is snoring away back in the bedroom, is none the wiser, until I wake up and find everything running, and some pretty weird stuff typed into the system.

On F11, (same hardware) this wasn't and isn't a problem. You actually have to hit the power button to wake the system up.

So the question is, in F16, where do I find the tweak setting to disable keyboard revival?

Thanks for looking.

Earlier today, I tried to move the mouse and nothing happened. I couldn't use Alt-Tab to switch to another task. I couldn't use Ctrl-Atl-F1 to get a console. Ctrl-Atl-Del got me nothing. I noticed the disk access light was lit solid and the only thing I could do was press the reset button and start over.

So what happened? I looked at /var/log/messages just before the reboot and didn't see anything of note.

Where can I look to find clues about what happened?

I'm running F16 on an AMD box with 8GB of memory. I tend to have lots of windows open on several different desktops as I use different desktops for different projects. Which means I hate to reboot.

uname -r tells me 3.3.5-2.fc16.x86_64 and yum update says I'm all up to date.

I'm usually running Firefox, VirtBox, Skype, Eclipse, Dropbox, Banshee, NixNote and Gkrell.of course all at the same time. This doesn't happen very often but it has happened before. If I knew what caused it I might be able to fix it and keep it from happening again.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hello everyone,

I am running Fedora 16 64bit with XFCE desktop, and I noticed in the administration menu there is an application called "Backup".

Now I am curious, would I be able to backup a 15gb system to an external hard drive that I have. The main reason I am curious about it, is I also have a lot of other files on this hard drive, so I need to know whether I can just make a folder or something on the harddrive and save a backup to the folder, and when I reinstall fedora, I can restore from the backup in that folder from the external hard drive.

Does this program work like that? Or will it reformat my harddrive or something?

If this doesnt work out, could anyone recommend a simple way to do this?

I am planning on fully reformating my hard drive, I will need to install Snow Leopard OSx86 first, then I will be reinstalling Windows 7, and finally I will be also reinstalling my most used of all Fedora 16.
So I will be triple booting, but I just want to start fresh, but I dont want to waste my limited bandwith and have to redownload all my linux applications again, that I use for Web Development.

If it would even be easier is there a way I could just backup specific programs or something and just restore the applications I want on a clean install?
Like Aptana Studio 3, NetBeans, Eclipse, Wine, VMware, GIMP, LibreOffice, etc.

But either way I think the whole backup to a folder on my External Harddrive would be the best method so far.

Plus I want to update to Fedora 17 when it comes out in 6 days!! :) WooHoo. :)
But I want to save my bandwidth for that, like I said, and not have to redownload all my applications again...

So any thoughts folks?
Id really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time!
