View Full Version : FC5|iBook G4 (Ati 9550) - X/graphical install problem.
20th March 2006, 08:15 PM
I use fedora core on my x86 PC for quite a long time now.
Today, with FC5 coming out, I just tried to install it on my 14" G4 iBook (with ati radeon 9550, 1,42Ghz CPU).
But after the media check, when anaconda wants to start X, it just hangs.
I got a totally white screen, then red, then green, then blue, then gray, and over.
Looks like a video test, but it never ends (I waited at least 10 minutes).
Any clue ?
(sorry for my pooooor english)

It's a bug in x.org. There will have to be an update of xorg with patches to fix this. I'm in the same boat. New (refurb) powermac G5 but no X. :(

But you CAN install FC5, even with the X issues. Type this at the boot prompt:
at the boot. This will install it just fine. Though X won't start after you install b/c of the bug report issues.

Text install just work, but IMHO there is no point installing FC5 on an iBook if I can't even get a GUI.
I'll just wait for new x.org packages.

Okay I just had success with getting X to start, with the fbdev driver:
# Driver "radeon"
VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT, NONE"
I specified the screen (I'm using a 21" Apple Studio CRT):
Viewport 0 0
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
And I commented out the load dri and load glx. And I did startx and it works! So now no 3D, but at least it's usable. Try the fbdev driver and see if it works.
