View Full Version : ATI Replacing nVidia

I know, I know.. I ALSO love nVidia. Had a FX-5500.. The kids wanted to play a game that required a DirectDraw video card; the built in POS on their system did not support it. So, I gave them my nVidia 5500, and got a stellar deal on an ATI 9550 256MB 8x AGP card.. I ran performance tests in WinDO$ XP before, and after the replacement, and the ATI card smoked the nVidia.
Did not surprise me though, nVidia was 3 years old, and the ATI is 2. I am always a few years behind though, gives them time to work out the bugs.
Any rate.. I've searched, and can't find it.
How can I replace/decompile or otherwise remove the nVidia driver, so I can install the ATI one??
I've searched the forum, and googled a tad, but nothing helped much...
I am posting this via the wifes WinDO$ XP box, before I fire up FC4 and trash it. LOL
Thanks for the help,

You can't get rid of me THAT ez Bob. :D Card works.. Sort of; only 800x600, but I am only 10 minutes in the fight.. LOL!
Am on the FC4 box now, running 'the card'.. Got to love a good boggle.
However a tad of help is welcome.. I tried to enable Livna and use their ATI stuff, however, got dep errors.. Just tells me I don't have 'ati' deps installed..
No frets, no fouls. Linux is NOT Windows.

Ok, got it to run aok.. Had to reset the monitor freqs, and resolutions is x11, but that was aok. GL is giving me a hard time though..
Am in the process of updateing/upgrading cia Livna/Base/Extras/Updates Released to see if I can get Super Tux back... sniffle... Since it was defaulted on the GL mode, it does not even load.
Also, GLXgears gives this error in konsole...
$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

Well, after a night, an a morning of headaches I can't get GLX to work with my ATI card under FC4. Being an nVidia lover, I purchased the ATI so I can feel the pain of others. Also, so my kids could play their games properly. Sacrafice is what a true human does for the love of the game.
Any rate, I found little help. ATI drivers installed aok, but no GLGears. Found dri referances, and also a few posts that said that GL is not supported ay the ATI 9550XL under Linux. Well, to put all of my stuff to rest, I booted to a Mepis Live CD, and OMG!!! It worked... I am posting this via the live CD now.
ANY help getting this to work under FC4 is welcome, since I do not want to have to abandon it just 'cause I crossed the trax.
I am still in research mode though, and will post if I get a fix. Not giving up the good fight yet, puzzles are our friends.

I got my ATI 9550 to work 70% faster than the nVidia FX5500 I gave the kids in FC4..
Thanks for all of your research, help, and encouragement.....
From the mucho help I got in this post, you can see my sarcasm...

just remove the Livna RPMS for nvidia if that's the way you did it, if not then dolocate nvidia and remove the ones that come up. Be careful though, it could indeed trash the system. I'd try first leaving the nvidia things on and then do
su -
rpm -Uhv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release4.rpm
yum install yum install kernel-module-fglrx-$(uname -r) to get ATI drivers installed.

If you use Nvidia package, simply use the command
nvidia-installer uninstall
I don't use that package as I prefer livna version which is more easier and flexible.
