Hi everyone. I am new to Linux and I would appreciate some help.
I am running Fedora4 in my system which I installed only a week ago. With the help of this forum I managed to get my external modem to work and connect to the internet.
My problem is that I can connect to the internet in my root account by activating my logical device (account) through the Network Configuration tool but I cannot do the same thing when I have longed on as the default simple user the system has created during installation. Every time I try to open the Network Configuration tool I get a popup that asks for my root password etc.
I understand that I have to give privileges to the simple user but I don’t know how.
In other words I want to connect to the internet from my unprivileged account without root passwords. I hope you can help.

Thank you in advance.

I think the solution to this is more likely to have the configuartion saved somehow for all users to use. How exactly do you configure it every time?

somewhere in the network configuration there is an option to allow normal users to control the device - I'll check where it is when I get home - Then one of the panel applets can be used to connect and disconnect (If I remember correctly).

You can allow users to control the device in System-Config-Network (Desktop -> System Settings -> Network), then providing you have set up all the ppp information, including your internet username & password in system-config-network, any user can activate the device from
Applications (Or Red Hat) -> System tools -> Network Device Control
To turn off the internet, simply select Deactivate.

If you want a panel icon for this, you can use the "Network Monitor" panel applet to bring up Network Device Control by double-clicking, and it has the added benefit of letting you know when there is network activity. If I remember, the "Modem Lights" applet doesn't bring the connection up or down properly.

Hope this helps
