View Full Version : Install problem with FC5 test 3

Looking for a new distro to try on my laptop (zv6000). Figured I'd give FC5 t3 a shot.
Before anaconda even has a chance to load, the install hangs on
SELinux: Registering netfilter hooks
When I type "linux selinux=no" at the boot prompt
It hangs at
io scheduler cfq registered (default)
Anyone seen this before?

kindly post to fedora-test list. The bootup option by the way is selinux=0.

I installed FC5 with SE enabled and later disabled it. While still enabled, reboots were smooth. After I disabled it, I get warning flags galore during boot but the systems appears to work ok.

Well, I gave selinux=0 a shot and gave me the same result as when I typed selinux=no.
Is it possible the media is bad?
Quite disheartening. Hope the final release doesn't do this.

Quite possible that the media went bad or the ISO images are corrupt. Do a shasum checksum and media test.

I wonder if it is a BIOS issue.

mine did the same exact thing on test 2., hung at cfq scheduler, but this is on a Abit KU8 motherboard with a sempron 64 processor, and it did it on every distro using a 2.6.15 kernel that I tried, yet 2.6.14 and below were fine, I think there is a problem with the 2.6.15 series of kernel rather than a media issue, because when gentoo moved to 2.6.15, it stopped on cfq and that was an install over a year old, not coming off the cd, plus thier new installer,,,, based on .*.15 kerel wont start for me either, stopping at cfq or right after "loading kernel....done" maybe someone could give out an idea of how to catch what the kernel is saying when this hard lock happens, because its before any arguments are passed to it, and before the system log starts up, maybe a serial terminal hooked up??

Have you tried a reinstall and disable SELinux during installation? If you'll give me a little bit I have a ZV6233 and will install it this morning and give you my results.

Okay. I did the install and everything seems to work so far (with exception of the Broadcom wireless card... with the included driver I still can't get an IP setup). What version of BIOS do you have? I have F1B, which is the latest one as far as I know (my machine is about 2 1/2 months old). If possible, upgrade your BIOS but BE CAREFUL when doing so. Always leave the battery in the machine fully charged AND it plugged in when doing a BIOS flash.

It hangs before I can do anything with the install (can't even get to anaconda).
I have F.08 as my BIOS version (got the laptop last June). I wouldn't mind flashing the bios for a full version of Fedora (which will be here in two weeks), but not Test 3.

Try these boot options at startup:
noapic acpi=off nofb

Gonna install it when I'm back on AC power.

I'm glad it worked! I wanted to give you my experiences with it thus far:
Everything seems stable so far. (I'll have a final verdict on that after running the update tool). If you have the Broadcom Airforce wireless card installed, it will not work. You must compile ndiswrapper from source, manually remove the "bcm43xx" module (I just renamed it bcm43xx.ko.bak) and use the windows drivers for the card. I'm currently using "oem5.inf" and the bcmwl5.inf files from my windows installs. After that, just use the system-network tool and set it up. It should work for you after that. Now, you can remove those boot options once you upgrade your BIOS to the latest version, which I think will be F.1B. I haven't tested the ATI drivers yet. If you do test them and they work, remember in BIOS to set it to "sideport+uma" and set uma to 128MB. That's currently the only way the ATI drivers work. Using the open source drivers work but no 3D acceleration. Sound DOES work. I haven't tried the Ehternet Card yet but from my experiences, there's no issue using the driver for it. Anything else I find, I will be glad to post for future readers.

Ok... it installed. However, during bootup 1) Kudzu gives a segmentation fault 2)eth0 fails 3) it hangs after starting the bluetooth services. It does this with and without the kernel options from before.
I might get brave and flash my bios tonight. This .exe bios flasher looks like it just runs in windows (is that correct?). It's been about 4 years since I've flashed a bios.
1) I hope it's my bios
2) If it isn't my bios, God help FC5

That is correct. Just remeber to PLUG IN the laptop AND make sure the battery is in and fully charged before doing so. Download the latest BIOS from HP's website. (You may have to google for it, but you can get it.) The reason why it hangs is because of a bug in BIOS in reference to ACPI. It won't hang after a BIOS update. Trust me, once the BIOS is updated, you can skip adding kernel options. There is another kernel option called acpi=noirq. You can try it and see if that changes anything.

Bios flash went without a hitch and I'm up and running. Thanks a bunch!
