I will start off with thanks and great site.
How about 2x or 3x the size(number of) posts in the new discussions area. This site is big enough now and gets enough traffic that I often miss tons of new posts. I mean how long is the average new post in the new discussions area? An hour? I know I can go to each area and find them or search. I often pop up the site when I get a few minutes and glance at the new posts. If it interests me or I think I can help I look. Otherwise I just move on. I think that a lot of us do the same thing. If the posts were up longer we (group we) could help people faster and when we(meaning me) need help it should help us get help faster. Just an opinion.
Thanks
Lazlow

I would edit your personal options to set the posts per page to what you want, then search for new posts (http://fedoraforum.org/forum/search.php?do=getnew).
I use this all the time.
You may find our RSS feed (http://fedoraforum.org/forum/external.php?type=RSS2) (linked from bottom of page) useful.

Thanks for the reply. I was just trying to avoid doing a search every time I stopped by. It came up in a couple of offline discusions about popular forums in general. Why it is so tough to get a reply when one really needs one (on any forum) and what could be done to fix that. Do not get me wrong. I think forums are great (especially this one). New ideas/opinions just need to be aired. That does not make them good or bad, just new (sometimes even the ones that reinvent the wheel). There are situations when RSS is not an option(complicated).
Thanks

Ha, there goes the Really Simple part of RSS. :)
We appreciate the suggestion.
If you mean the Current Discussions Activity list on the forum index, there's a limit to how big that can be without making the front page huge and unwieldly. To me it is the stuff being discussed within the last few minutes, rather than the last few hours.
If you don't want to miss posts the best way is to use the new posts search link.
If it is unanswered posts you want, here's a link to search for them in the past week (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/search.php?do=process&replyless=1&replylimit=0&searchdate=7&dontcache=1).

This all came from a general discussion offline about how to get more questions answered faster (in forums gernerally). Picture 40 computer geeks with beer drolling on scantily clad waitresses. Most of us agreed that the natural human condition is to be lazy. ie most people will not search, just take a quick look at the current splash. They will help if they can, read what looks interesting and move on. You know how hard it is just to get people to search when they have a problem (even a bad one). The idea was to encourage people to help when they can. While my "helping" comments (or a lot of newer people comments) may not always help, they may spark more thought or draw the attention of the more seasoned experts.(as opposed to us raw expers). From my point of view it would be better to have the whole front page current discusions and move the sections down a level. I will try to shut up now.
Thanks

Ok time for me to get into this conversation...

Altought I understand your issue and as a casual user of the site I miss several new posts for not being 24/7 here... But there is a problem with your suggestion, the forum is huge the way it is right now with a couple dozen of sections and adding another huge box with 18 comments on top of the page will make it unmanageable and believe me that instead of being easier for the users it will be harder to navigate... The solution may help you but not most members...
