Hi Everyone

I am currently trying out Fedora Core 5 test 3 and so far it looks very nice. One thing I'm particulalry interested in trying out is the new compositing manager built-in to Metacity in Gnome 2.14 (see section "Look Through Any Window" in this article for more details: http://www.gnome.org/%7Edavyd/gnome-2-14/).

That article shows the compositing manager being controlled using a tool called 'configuration editor' but having searched high and low I cannot find this in FC5-test 3. My web searches have led me to understand this tool might be envoked from the command line with "gconf-editor" but that doesn't work either.

So, does anyone know how to get this configuration editor working in FC5, and indeed does the compositing manager work? Of course if I am missing something blindingly obvious then I'll be only too happy to be put straight!

Thanks.

Didnt work also when my friend tried it. The UI didnt show up after logging in. He cant even pass through the login screen.

Also gconf-tool2 command didnt work. He manually modified the metacity value using the configuration editor.

yeah i manually checked the value in the GUI also, i was in gnome when i enabled it so i was already loged in, but after it blinked my windows a bunch of times i was left with no window borders and no special effects

meh.. i dont have much faith in it working with xinerama anyway and i wont go back to only one screen so i may be out in the cold for a while even when it is released

Thanks guys for your answers.

I'm running FC5 in VMware right now, so my tests might not be that relevant, but I do have another question.

Firstly, at what point in those instructions (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject/aiglx) should the new visual affects appear? The instructions end by saying you should add the 'Composite' extension to your xorg.conf file, but then what happens after that? I have re-booted but there is no change.

And my second question was going to be "I still can't find gconf-editor - where is it?" but I've just figured this out: I needed to install it with "yum install gconf-editor".

Thanks
