K, how do you boot to init 3 without editing inittab first?
I would guess it's a grub command line option but I have no idea.

nogo...tried init3 and init 3. I'm baffeled. With no hardware or BIOS changes the same machine has run FC3, FC4, and FC5 t2. T3 is the Terminator!

Hold the presses don't release it yet! I tried FC5 test3 on two Nvidia g2 pro older dell 1 gig machines and anaconda crashes every time. Previous FC4 installs worked flawlessly. Possibly support for legacy drivers is missing.

The install screen gets as far as checking dependencies and then X dies and the only option is to reboot.

No need to stop the presses for bugs on a test release. Just post to fedora-test list and use bugzilla for filing bug reports.

Doing a re-install cause I really jacked xorg playing with ATI drivers, anyhow: This is my 3rd install of FC5T3. The first two were from CD's, this one is a dvd. Once again, first reboot after first boot, and everything goes dead.
And again, replacing quiet on boot with init 3 doesn't work. "init 3" boots to run level 5 and fails. "init3" causes a kernel panic.
Replacing rhgb quite with either of these options fails the same.
The culprit seems to be any screen resolution greater then 640x480 fails until yum update replaces something.

Can anyone tell me another way to get Grub to boot to init 3, so I can do a yum update?

Well, I got in using Linux Rescue....however I would like to know if the syntax I'm using is correct and /or it's just an issue with my system.

I had this problem also, I tracked it down to using 16 or 24 bit color. I could do any resolution at 256 color.

What is your kernel version? I was using the initial FC5 T3 kernel. I installed kernel 2.6.15-1.2025_FC5 and it fixed the problem. Side note, I installed 2.6.15-1.2038_FC5 and couldn't even get it to boot, so I'm back to 2025.

I have an AMD64, ATI X600, Gateway 7510GX Laptop
