Will FC4 work with USB-to-serial port adaptor?

My new Compaq doesn't have any old-style (obsolete?) serial ports, but it did come with a winmodem. As I mentioned on another thread, I got the Linuxant driver to work but it still has some problems. I have a couple of other options: buy a serial card and plug in my external modem, or buy a USB to serial port adaptor. They are about the same price. The box has about 7 USB ports.

Will FC4 recognize the modem and work with the USB option? I use KDE so I'm hoping that if FC4 works so will KPPP.

PS I went to Fry's today to buy a serial card. I asked some kid if they had any and all I got was a blank stare. He asked another guy and got the same blank stare. He asked what I was going to use it for and I said it was to connect an external modem. Another blank stare. They finally asked an older clerk who kind of remembered what they were but said they probably didn't carry them any more. Sucks to get old.

I scuba dive and a lot of dive computers use serial ports to download data from the dives (basically depth vs time time data). I am also the author of http://gdivelog.sf.net so have a fair amount of experience with Linux and serial ports.

IMO&E, get a PCI card unless you can try before you buy. I have one USB to serial that does not work at all and one that works fine on OS X, but not on linux. /dev/ttyUSB0 is created, but it does not work.
