Let me start by saying I am extremely new to linux.

When I used the Knoppix boot cd in the Gateway 2500 the sceen worked fine, 1024 x 768, but in Fedora the screen looks horrible, at 600 x 800. I have checked the setting in Gnome and I can't go any higher.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really don't want to give up on fedora. Thank you.

Cant really give you any advice on how to manually configure FC4's resolution, but I had a simialar problem with my old NEC laptop trying to install DSL Linux. I can tell you that you will need to use frame buffering on a laptop. This should be an option whenever you find FC4's settings.
