I have not been able to get digital surround out using xine/mplayer. I have an Audigy4 with the white SPDIF out (1/8 mono to RCA to my receiver which works nicely in XP using Creative's driver). In xine/mplayer, setting audio to passthrough, 5.1 device to either alsa's SPDIF or pcm.mixed-digital will give me a constant noise, indicating "some" signal is passing through but not the right signal.
