I am running the most up-to-date FC5t2 (as of 0930 CST 01-26-06). I have installed a (Chaintech) VIA VT1724 chip sound card, which was discovered and set up with the snd-ice1724 driver. I am running the default repos supplemented by ATRPMS.

Here are the symptoms:
1. Sound card detection finds the card, but nothing happens (other than hangup) when I click the Play test sound button.
2. I enabled system sounds and each sound on the new panel tests OK (I suppose it's OK--I hear 8 occurrences of each sound), but the system sounds don't work.
3. Helix player will play an ogg file, but Rhythmbox will not-it hangs. (This observation rules out the old "turn up your volumes" answer--I think that's been fixed, anyway.)

Additional symptoms-likely totally unrelated:
1. mplayer will not start
2. XMMS starts OK. I click on "list" to load up some files and the file display window shows only squares (unprintables, I guess) in the directory and file names.

I have resisted swapping in a new sound card since I think this one should work (and does, in some cases).

Addition to prior message with additional symptom. After trying several ideas to get sound working, I wind up with a thumping sound (about two thumps a second). Sometimes the frequency or chording of the thump will change over time.

Last night I pulled the Chaintech sound card and activated (in BIOS) the on-board AC-97 audio. Most sounds then started working.

Any ideas or suggestions to get the Chaintech (Envy24 chip) to work? It's a much nicer card than what I have on the mobo.
