hey, i just downloaded the FC5 test 2 and it looks good, i have some gripes about gnome but that doesn't have anything to do w/the distro, lol. but i was wondering - is there a working yum.conf file for FC5 that has the repos like livna, freshrpms, etc. available? or is there a similar file for smartpm? i haven't been able to get apt up & running yet.
also - my ears are starting to curl up and die :] how do i go about getting mp3 support? i've installed libs and mp3 encoders / decoders to no avail :(
also - i'm told that i need libssl.so.5 and libcrypto.so.5 but they are already installed. so why is it telling me i dont have them when i actually do? :(
thanks

Third-party repos like livna or freshrpms don't normally support test versions. Wait until the release of FC5, or download source RPMs and recompile them on your system.

ok, so what about it wanting packages that ARE installed, but it thinking they are NOT?
also - after an update for some reason now my desktop background is gone, my desktop icons are gone, and i cannot right click on the desktop. when i navigate to the Desktop folder and list the files, this is all i get: [tim@localhost Desktop]$ ls -a
. .. .directory and then this is the contents of the .desktop file: [Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Directory
BgImage=
Icon=desktop
i dont believe i updated any of the GNOME files but i did update the kernel. ? i'll reboot to the old kernel and see if the problem still exists.. any ideas? thanks
// yep, old kernel - same problem. :(
also - could i compile xmms from source with mp3 support?

A *VERY* quick search of FedoraForum.org FC5 dev forum brings up the following for yum repos already supporting FC5 test 2.
http://forum.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=92420
As for MP3 support: this is a well known one, searching the forums would again turn up with the goods. You need to install mp3 support from one of the third part repos - try the dag repo described in the above post.
Desktop issues? I've had a few during the FC5 test phase. But that's what happens. You'll usually find that the next time there's a big update to rawhide, the bug will be fixed. Things get broken in rawhide every now and again - part of the dev phase I guess. Things get more and more stable as you go from test 1 to 2 to 3 and then (hopefully) the final gold release.
If you've got serious bugs, however, please report them to the Fedora bugzilla (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/index.cgi) - it benefits us all if bugs are reported and then fixed.
Cheers,
Duncan

well the desktop problem has happened before with i BELIEVE FC3 and the way i fixed it was i reinstalled. not exactly a thought i cherish as although the installer has gotten prettier, its still not any more fun.
exactly what packages do i need for mp3 support? also - how would i add the dag source as you instructed? :-[ i only see a source there for FC4 x86_64, not an FC5 one
thanks
also...whats up with mounting my NTFS partition? lol i've seen the i686 rpm at linux-ntfs.org but i have a 64 bit cpu

I am using this repo on FC5t2:
[atrpms]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - ATrpms
baseurl=http://dl.atrpms.net/fc5-$basearch/atrpms/stable
I had to change the baseurl because the current $releasever is 4.91 and there is only a 5 repo available. Other than that it works well and it includes mplayer so you can get your mp3 support :)
Enjoy,
Garry

i saw a warning on another post (the link was posted previously) that adding atrpms to your updates is not advised. they gave this link: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/JohnMahowald/ATrpmsWarning
aside from that, does anyone have the baseurl you'd use for dries? or dag? whichever one is supporting fc5?

Does the new Fedora Core 5 include a new wallpaper? Can someone upload it or point me to somewhere I can download it?
I want it for my Fedora Core 4 system. :cool:

yes, and its beautiful. as is the boot screen and the logon screen :P after you update them of course, out of the box they're the same old thing.

or http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/anarchy85/default.jpg <== 1600x1200 but it may have lost a little quality?
and since the 1600x1200 is too large for my photobucket account and i dont want the jpg to lose quality,
http://willc0de4food.is-a-geek.com/images/default.png i'll host the 1600x1200, but i dont guarantee 100% uptime
there ya go

Have you tried PUP? It will be the official update tool. The idea being that anything that PUP delivers will run on FC5 without destroying the system. I found PUP pretty fast, and almost exactly as exact as what I have been reading on the net.

I am currently not running on fc5, as my kids like the games available for fc4. But if you use gnome or kde, and go the the system management area, you will see a small yellow icon to the left of the popup, and it says software updater.
