Is "Release open, announced" the same thing as "General Availability" on http://fedora.redhat.com/About/schedule/?

Yes it does.
So far both Fedora and Gnome freeze on the same day, and are released on the same day.

This could take some doing.
But it could be good for fedora if it works out.

I am so excited about the DVD release for FC5 Test2! I don't care if they get the anaconda thing completed yet or not. I just want the DVD image and all of the bug fixes up to the test2 release. Does anyone have any advance knowledge if the DVD image will be ready for t2 or not?

Yes. The DVD image will be available. Anaconda work is directly related to the supportability of DVD images and other features so regardless of personal concerns, it is work that needs to be done.

Anaconda has specific support code to enable all the different CD/DVD/USB etc devices to work as a installation source. It was being rewritten to use a yum backend for its packages dependency logic which was previously custom written. The advantage of having a yum backend is enormous.
* The upgrade path between using yum and Anaconda is now much more similar leading to better testing, feedback and upgradability
* Package selection process is now much better.
* Custom hacks to support package upgradation can be reduced very much if not entirely eliminated.
* In the near future, Anaconda will be able to support custom mirror listing and other repositories even during installation. For example, you can install packages from Fedora Extras or any other software repository you specificy including your own.
Now when Anaconda was being written, the support code to enable DVD drives was not completed in time for the test 1 release. So even if you combine all the CD's the installer wouldn't recognise it. Now that has been resolved and test 2 would be able to support it once again.
