I'd like to setup RAID 1 (mirroring) for my boot disk (/boot and / partitions). In the past I have done this using software RAID but I've never been happy with the need for manual intervention when the first disk fails. Usually this is because the controller won't boot from the second disk while the first is still present (even if it’s broken). When this happens I have to go in and pull out the SATA cable from the failed drive. Now I'm building a server to be co-located in a hosting facility where I will be charged for someone to go and pull out the SATA cable to get the thing to boot and then charged again when the drive is replaced.

I've noticed that some of the chipset manufacturers make binary drivers for Fedora so I was wondering if anyone has got any recommendations (based on specific experience) on a cheap SATA 'RAID' (AKA FakeRAID) card/chipset that can be used in 'RAID' mode to boot Fedora? Any tips/tricks would also be greatly appreciated.
