Hello, i wish to install FC4 on a hard disk connected to a SATA + IDE RAID controller card but the hard disk is not detected by the FC4 installer, the chip on the card is a VIA VT6421 .
There is a patch which should fix this problem which i have downloaded,
"via_ fc4_via_sata_patch_for_vt6421_appnote_v0.8.gz" from http://drivers.viaarena.com/
is it possible to patch the installation kernel for a floppy disk or do i have to patch the kenel and rebuild the FC4 cd?.

I have the 4 FC4 cds, and MDK10 installed on another system, can i use that to install the FC4 kernel source and apply the patch? if so are all the needed packages on the 4 disk set?

There is a pre-compiled module in the download "sata_via.ko", can i use this with the installer to enable detection of the hardware?

Here's my unsuccessful experience trying to install the driver for a VIA6421 IDE/SATA RAID controller card.
The problem is my kernel version mismatches the precompiled drivers' kernel version.

I downloaded 3 different precompiled drivers from VIA.
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
The available versions are
2.6.15-1.2054_FC5
2.6.18-1.2798.fc6
2.6.21-1.3194.fc7
I have kernel
2.6.20-1.2320.fc5

I tried bypassing the install scripts (they fail on kernel version check) and installing the driver manually.
This means copying viamraid.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.20-1.2320.fc5/kernel/drivers/scsi/

Then do
# depmod 2.6.20-1.2320.fc5
# modprobe
FATAL: Error inserting viamraid (/lib/modules/2.6.20-1.2320.fc5/kernel/drivers/scsi/viamraid.ko): Invalid module format

And that's the error I can't get around (unless VIA compiled a driver for my particular FC5 Kernel).
I didn't think it would work anyway. But now I'm sure it doesn't. ugh...
